Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7316

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The son of Adam has not filled any vessel worse than his stomach. A few morsels are enough for a person to keep his back upright. But if (eating more) is unavoidable, then one third should be for his food, one third for his drink and one third (left empty) for his breathing."

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Yahya bin Jabir (who is Ibn Hassan al-Ta'i) explicitly mentions his hearing from al-Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib in a narration that comes later in this same book (8144). Despite that, Abu Hatim al-Razi questioned his hearing and said: "Yahya's narration from al-Miqdam is mursal", and Imam al-Mizzi and other later scholars followed him in this. On the other hand, al-Khatib al-Baghdadi paid no attention to this and stated in "Talkhis al-Mutashabih fi al-Rasm" p. 556 that he heard from al-Nawwas bin Sam'an and al-Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib. Imam al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban graded this hadith sahih, while al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar called it hasan in "Fath al-Bari" 16/392. Yahya's hearing from al-Miqdam is very likely, because they were from the same city and there are about 39 years between their deaths, and Allah knows best. Moreover, there is also corroboration (mutaba'ah) for it from al-Miqdam.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam al-Nasa'i (6739) and Ibn Hibban (674) through the route of 'Abd Allah bin Wahb, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam Ahmad in "al-Musnad" 28/(17186), Imam al-Tirmidhi (2380) and al-Nasa'i (6738) via Abu Salamah Sulayman bin Sulaym from Yahya bin Jabir.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi mentioned Habib bin Salih together with Abu Salamah and said this hadith is "hasan sahih".
Important point: This narration will come later with the author (al-Hakim) at number (8144) through this same route.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (6737) recorded it through the route of Sulayman bin Sulaym, via Salih bin Yahya bin al-Miqdam, from his grandfather al-Miqdam.
Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Hibban (5236) also recorded it through the route of Sulayman bin Sulaym, but he added "Yahya bin al-Miqdam" between Salih bin Yahya and his grandfather al-Miqdam.
Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Majah (3349) recorded it through the route of Muhammad bin Harb, from his mother, from her mother (his grandmother), that she heard al-Miqdam narrate this hadith.
Note / Clarification: The word in the hadith, "ukulat", is the plural of "uklah" (with a dammah on the hamzah), meaning: "a morsel".
