It is narrated from Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: I presented dates to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people began eating two dates together at a time, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade "iqran" (eating two together).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it in this way.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted (erroneously) and written as "Sa'id".
Grading: On the basis of supporting reports this hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi". Technical note / Defect ('illah): On the whole there is no problem with its narrators, but it is not established for us that al-Hasan al-Basri heard from "Sa'd", the freed slave (mawla) of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), especially since al-Hasan al-Basri is also alone in narrating from him. Here Abu Amir al-Khazzaz refers to "Salih bin Rustum". Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (3/1716), Ibn Majah (3332), al-Tirmidhi in "al-'Ilal al-Kabir" (559), Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (682), Abu Ya'la (1574) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (5498) and "al-Awsat" (8543) through the route of Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tirmidhi says in "al-'Ilal" (560): I asked Muhammad (al-Bukhari) about this hadith and he said: Abu Amir al-Khazzaz narrated it as "al-Hasan from Sa'd the mawla of Abu Bakr", while Ibn Awn narrated it as "al-Hasan from Jundub" (and this is not Jundub al-Bajali). No one has decided which of the two narrations is more correct. Note / Clarification: We say: the narration of Ibn Awn (through the route mentioned above) has not been available to us. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its supporting report is the hadith of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) found in al-Bukhari (2455) and Muslim (2045): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade "iqran", unless a man asks his brother's permission. General principle: The prohibited "iqran" means eating two dates together at once (without permission) when eating with a group.
