Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7308

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me two prayers, two ways of eating, two kinds of recitation and two ways of dressing. He forbade me to pray after Fajr until the sun has risen high, and after Asr until the sun has set; he forbade me to eat while lying face down on my stomach; and he forbade me to wrap myself in the "samma'" (a sheet wrapped so that the hands cannot come out) and to sit in "ihtiba'" (sitting with the knees drawn up to the stomach) in a single garment when there is no covering between my private parts and the sky.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it in this form.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (S) and (M) it is "mustalhiban"; and "musalhib" is one who is lying on his stomach.

Grading: Apart from the story of the prohibition of eating while lying on the stomach, the rest of the hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy) except Umar bin Abd al-Rahman bin Usayd al-Qurashi; three trustworthy narrators did narrate from him, but neither a declaration of his trustworthiness nor a criticism of him is transmitted from anyone, so he is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition). Al-Dhahabi declared him feeble (wahhahu) in the "Talkhis".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bazzar (858) and Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "al-Ja'diyyat" (1940) through the route of al-Harith al-A'war, and al-Tabarani transmitted it in "al-Awsat" (3638) and "al-Saghir" (482) through the route of Hujayyah bin Adi.
Note / Clarification: Both of them narrated from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) the story of the prohibition of prayer at sunrise and sunset.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its supporting report is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) found in al-Bukhari (584) and Muslim (1511), the wording being al-Bukhari's: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade two kinds of sale, two kinds of dress and two prayers; he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade praying after Fajr until the sun rises and after Asr until the sun sets, and he forbade "ishtimal al-samma'" (wrapping oneself in a single sheet) and "ihtiba'" (sitting with the knees drawn up to the stomach) in a single garment in which the private parts are exposed towards the sky, and he also forbade "munabadhah" and "mulamasah" (pre-Islamic kinds of sale).
Reference / Source: With the author (al-Hakim), the hadith of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) will come later at number (7348), in which eating while lying on the stomach is prohibited; however, its chain is weak.
Note / Clarification: The explanation of the Prophetic statement "He forbade me to wear the samma'" is that a person wraps a garment around himself in such a way that no side of it is raised (so the hands cannot come out). It is called "samma'" because it closes all the openings for the hands and feet, like a solid rock (sakhrah samma') that has no hole or crack.
General principle: Ibn al-Athir says in "al-Nihayah" that according to the jurists it means covering oneself in a single garment with nothing underneath, then lifting it from one side and placing it on the shoulder, whereby there is a risk of the private parts being exposed.
