It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was among the People of the Suffah when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us some Ajwah dates, and they were poured out among us. Out of hunger we began eating two dates together at a time, so whenever one of us ate two together, he would say to his companions: "I have eaten two together, (with your permission) you too eat two at a time."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: It is thus in the manuscripts, while in the narration of Ibn Hibban the words are "fa-kubbat" (then it fell upside down).
Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ata' bin al-Sa'ib suffered from memory deterioration (ikhtilat), and Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid's narration from him is from after his deterioration. Furthermore, there is disagreement over Ata' regarding its chain and whether it is marfu' or mawquf, as will be detailed. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ishaq bin Rahwayh in his Musnad (157), and through his route by Ibn Hibban (5233), and also by Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/339) through the route of Abu Ayyub al-Muqri'. Both of them transmit it via Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid with this same chain. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah (8/306) and Abu Nu'aym in "Tarikh Asbahan" (1/286) through the route of Muhammad bin Fudayl, by Abu al-Shaykh in "Akhlaq al-Nabi" (641) through the route of Abd al-Salam bin Harb, and by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Shu'ab" (5485) through the route of Amr bin Abi Qays; these three narrate it via Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, from Hujr bin Abi al-Anbas, from Abu Hurayrah as marfu' (except for Ibn Abi Shaybah, with whom it is mawquf). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Nu'aym gave a biography of the narrator "Hujr" in his "Tarikh" and cited this hadith in it; he also has a biography in Abu al-Shaykh's "Tabaqat" (1/422), but without this hadith. Note / Clarification: There is severe disagreement over the names in the chain: with Ibn Abi Shaybah it is "Abu Jahsh" (in some manuscripts "Juhaysh"), and likewise with al-Bayhaqi, who said: "So I found it in my book: from Abu Juhaysh"; with Abu al-Shaykh it is "Abu Jubayr", and al-Baghawi, who narrated it through Abu al-Shaykh's route in "Sharh al-Sunnah" (2892) and "al-Anwar fi Shama'il al-Nabi al-Mukhtar" (986), records "Ibn Jubayr". Important point: See the discussion before it.
