Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7305

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Satan is very sharp of sense and a licker (of hands), so guard yourselves against him. Whoever goes to sleep with the smell (of food) still on his hand and something afflicts him, let him blame no one but himself."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with these words.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "al-Mawardi".

Grading: It is "mawdu'" (fabricated), as al-Dhahabi said in the "Talkhis".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ya'qub bin al-Walid al-Azdi al-Madani is a liar and used to fabricate hadiths. Here Ibn Abi Dhi'b refers to Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi (1859) and Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "al-Ja'diyyat" (2837) through the route of Ahmad bin Mani' from Ya'qub bin al-Walid. Al-Tirmidhi called it "gharib" and stated that it is also narrated as marfu' from Suhayl bin Abi Salih, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah.
Note / Clarification: The route of Abu Salih from Abu Hurayrah will be mentioned later.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" (7/148) through the route of al-Hasan bin Arafah from Ya'qub bin al-Walid. He indicated that Ya'qub is alone in narrating these hadiths from Ibn Abi Dhi'b and that they are all "not preserved" (ghayr mahfuz).
Note / Clarification: This narration will come again at number (7383) through another route from Ahmad bin Mani'.
Grading: The second part of this narration, "Whoever spends the night with a smell on his hand", is sahih, and it will come with the author (al-Hakim) at numbers (7380 to 7382) through the route of Abu Salih from Abu Hurayrah.
Note / Clarification: "Hassas" means having an intense perception; "lahhas" means one who licks. The "smell (rih) on the hand" is explained in other sources as "rih ghamar" (the grease and greasy odour of meat).
