It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man's she-camel was about to die, so he slaughtered it with a wooden peg (watad). I asked him: Did you slaughter it with an iron blade? He said: No, rather with wood. Then that man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to eat its meat.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and its chain is also sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim). I did not rule it sahih on their condition only because Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it in "al-Muwatta" from Zayd bin Aslam in mursal form (without the Companion).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The speaker (qa'il) here is Jarir bin Hazim.
Grading: The hadith is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy), but Jarir bin Hazim is alone in making it a hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, while narrators with stronger memory and in greater number have contradicted him, as will be made clear later. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Nasa'i (4476), Ibn al-Jarud in "al-Muntaqa" (896) and Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" (2/128) through the route of Muhammad bin Ma'mar, from Habban bin Hilal, with this same chain; and by al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (2456) and al-Bayhaqi (9/281) through the route of Sulayman bin Harb, from Jarir bin Hazim. Details of the narration: It was narrated by Ahmad (39/23647) through the route of Sufyan al-Thawri and by Abu Dawud (2823) through the route of Ya'qub bin Abd al-Rahman al-Iskandarani, both from Zayd bin Aslam, from Ata' bin Yasar: "A man from Banu Harithah was grazing a she-camel; it began to die, so he pierced its throat with a wooden peg (watad) and slaughtered it, then he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to eat it". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Malik in "al-Muwatta'" (2/489), and Abd al-Razzaq (8626) and Ibn Abi Shaybah (4/254) from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, i.e. both Malik and Ibn Uyaynah, narrated it from Zayd bin Aslam, from Ata' bin Yasar as "mursal" (without mention of the Companion). Reference / Source: See the narrations after it, and numbers (7772) and (7792). Also see the hadith of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) in "Musnad Ahmad" (8/4597), where we have mentioned all its supporting reports.
