أخبرنا أحمد بن سلمان الفقيه ﵀ ببغداد، حدثنا أبو داود سليمان بن الأشعث وجعفر بن محمد بن شاكر، قالا: حدثنا عفّان، حدثنا حماد بن سَلَمة، عن عاصم، عن أبي وائل: أنَّ ناسًا سألوا أسامةَ بنَ زيد: أنْ كلِّمْ لنا هذا الرجلَ - يعني عثمان بن عفّان -! قال: قد كلَّمناه ما دون أن نفتحَ بابًا أن لا نكونَ أولَ من فتحه، ما أقول: أمراؤُكم خِياركم، بعد شيءٍ سمعتُه من رسول الله ﷺ؛ سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: "يُؤتَى بالوالي الذي كان يُطاع في معصية الله ﷿، فيُؤْمَرُ به إلى النار، فيُقذَفُ فيها فتندَلِقُ به أقتابُه - يعني أمعاءَه فيستديرُ فيها كما يستديرُ الحِمارُ في الرَّحى، فيأتي عليه أهلُ طاعته من الناس فيقولون له أيْ فُلُ، أين ما كنتَ تأمرنا؟! فيقول: كنتُ آمرُكم بأمرٍ وأخالفُكم إلى غيرِه" (3).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that some people said to him: Speak to this man (Uthman bin Affan, may Allah be pleased with him) on our behalf! He said: We have spoken to him, short of opening a door of which we would be the first to open, and I do not say about anyone, "Your leaders are the best of you," after something I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The governor (ruler) who used to be obeyed in disobedience to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will be brought, then it will be commanded that he be taken to the Fire, and he will be thrown into it, and his intestines will spill out, and he will go around in them just as a donkey goes around a millstone. Then those people who used to obey him will come to him and say to him: 'O so-and-so! Where is that (good) which you used to command us?!' He will say: 'I used to command you to one thing and myself do the opposite.'"
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (authentic in its chain), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(3) حديث صحيح، وهذا إسناد حسن من أجل عاصم - وهو ابن أبي النجود - فهو صدوق حسن الحديث، وقد توبع - عفّان: هو ابن مسلم الصَّفّار، وأبو وائل: هو شقيق بن سلمة الأسدي.
Grading: This is a 'sahih' hadith, and its chain is 'hasan' because Asim bin Abi al-Najud is 'saduq', and he has also been corroborated.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the chain, 'Affan' is Affan bin Muslim al-Saffar, and 'Abu Wa'il' is (the eminent Successor) Shaqiq bin Salamah al-Asadi.
وأخرجه أحمد 36 (21794) عن عبد الصمد بن عبد الوارث، عن حماد بن سلمة، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (36/21794) narrated it via Abd al-Samad bin Abd al-Warith from Hammad bin Salamah with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد (21784) و (21800) و (21819)، والبخاري (3267) و (7098)، ومسلم (2989) من طريق الأعمش، عن أبي وائل، به. فاستدراك الحاكم له ذهولٌ منه. وأخرجه أحمد بإثر الرواية (21819) من طريق منصور بن المعتمر، عن أبي وائل، به.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at (21784), (21800) and (21819), Imam al-Bukhari at (3267) and (7098), and Imam Muslim at (2989), via al-A'mash (Sulayman bin Mihran) from Abu Wa'il (Shaqiq bin Salamah).
Note / Clarification: Imam al-Hakim's adding this hadith as a supplement despite Imam Muslim having recorded it is an 'oversight' (dhuhul) on his part.
Details of the narration: Imam Ahmad also narrated it after narration number (21819) via Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir from Abu Wa'il.
