It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen and said: "Teach them the rulings of the Shari'ah and judge between them." He said: I have no knowledge of judging. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his chest with his hand and supplicated: 'Allahumma ihdihi al-qada'' (O Allah, guide him and grant him understanding in judging).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is 'da'if jiddan' (very weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The hadith scholars agree that the narrator 'Muslim bin Kaysan al-Dabbi al-Mula'i al-A'war' is weak. Note / Clarification: 'Warqa'' mentioned in the chain is Warqa' bin Umar al-Yashkuri. Reference / Source: Waki' narrated it in "Akhbar al-Qudat" (1/87) and Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (457) via Abd al-Samad bin al-Nu'man from Warqa' bin Umar, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Waki' also narrated it (1/87) via Ubayd bin Khunays, who made it a narration of the 'Musnad of Buraydah' (Buraydah bin al-Husayb, may Allah be pleased with him). However, according to Imam al-Daraqutni, Ubayd bin Khunays is a 'matruk' narrator. Important point: We say that in place of this weak hadith, the hadith of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) suffices, in which he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to Yemen, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! Are you sending me (as a judge) to people who are older than me, to judge between them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go, for Allah the Exalted will make your tongue firm and guide your heart." Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in the "Musnad" (2/666), and other hadith scholars with a sahih chain. (4709). Note / Clarification: In this regard, also see the earlier hadith number (4709).
