Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7177

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever among you is able to speak Arabic should never speak in Persian, for it breeds hypocrisy."

Grading: Its chain is talif (extremely weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We could not find a biography of Ahmad bin al-Layth bin al-Khalil. Ibn Mandah mentioned him in "Fath al-Bab" (1131) among those whose kunya is Abu Bakr. Ishaq bin Ibrahim was mentioned by Ibn Hibban in "al-Thiqat" (8/108), where he is written as 'al-Juzayri', although by rule the attribution to 'al-Jazirah' is 'Jazari'; moreover, he is 'Balkhi', not 'Jazari'. However, the editor stated that one manuscript has 'al-Harizi'. Ibn Hibban says that he narrates from al-Thawri a sound written collection (nuskhah mustaqimah). Ibn Mandah wrote him in "Fath al-Bab" (214) as 'al-Hariri' (with ha'), which matches our manuscripts. As for 'Umar bin Harun' (Umar bin Harun bin Yazid al-Balkhi), he is 'matruk al-hadith'; Imam Ibn Ma'in accused him of lying, and on that basis Imam al-Dhahabi declared it defective in "al-Talkhis", saying that Ibn Ma'in called him a liar and the body of hadith scholars abandoned him.
Reference / Source: Ibn Kathir called it 'mawdu'' (fabricated) in "Musnad Umar", and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared its chain 'wahin' (extremely weak) in "Fath al-Bari" (9/333).
Details of the narration: Abu Sa'id al-Naqqash narrated it in "Thalathat Majalis min Amalihi" (3) via Isra'il bin Abd Allah al-Tarazi from Sa'id bin al-Qasim bin al-'Ala', with this same chain. After the narration he stated explicitly: "To my knowledge, no one other than Umar bin Harun al-Balkhi narrated it from Usamah (bin Zayd)."
Reference / Source: Through the route of Sa'id bin al-Qasim, Imam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned it in "Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim" (1/523) via al-Hafiz al-Silafi.
Grading: It is gharib, munkar, indeed mawdu' and fabricated; the correct view is that it is a saying of Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) himself (mawquf).
Note / Clarification: Ibn Taymiyyah (1/524) and Ibn Kathir in "Musnad Umar" (677) narrated it via Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Muhammad al-Muqri' from Ahmad bin al-Khalil. In Ibn Kathir's narration there is the addition "from Umar". Ibn Taymiyyah says that these words resemble the words of Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), while attributing it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (as marfu') is open to question.
Important point: Ibn Kathir explicitly declared it a munkar and false narration, making clear that it is a saying of Umar.
