Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7169

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know whose faith is the most excellent among the people of faith?" The people said: O Messenger of Allah, the angels. He said: "They are indeed so, and that is their due. What could prevent them, when Allah has placed them in the station in which they are? Rather, someone other than them?" The people said: O Messenger of Allah, then the prophets, whom Allah honored with prophethood and messengership. He said: "They are indeed so, and that is their due. Rather, someone other than them." We said: O Messenger of Allah, then who are they? He said: "People who will come after me, (born) from the loins of men. They will believe in me though they have not seen me; they will find hanging pages (of the Qur'an and hadith) and act upon what is in them. These are the most excellent of the people of faith in faith."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts we have, this name has been distorted (by error) and written as "Ubayd Allah", whereas the correct name is "Abd Allah" (bin Muhayriz), as the other places in this same book confirm.

Grading: (2) Its chain is very weak, because of the narrator Muhammad bin Abi Humayd al-Madani (Abu Ibrahim al-Madani).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because of this very narrator, Imam al-Dhahabi declared it weak in "al-Talkhis", saying: "Muhammad, they (the hadith scholars) declared him weak." Likewise, al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared it weak in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (1/2922) and "al-Amali al-Mutlaqah" (p. 40).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bazzar (288) narrated it via Muhammad bin al-Muthanna from Abu Amir al-'Aqadi with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ishaq bin Rahawayh narrated it in his "Musnad" (as in al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1/2922), as did al-Bazzar (288), Abu Ya'la (160), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Sharaf Ashab al-Hadith" (62), Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Tamhid" (20/248), Bibi bint Abd al-Samad in "Juz' Bibi" (104), Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (58/255) and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "al-Amali al-Mutlaqah" (p. 37), through various routes from Muhammad bin Abi Humayd al-Madani from Zayd bin Aslam from Aslam (the freed slave of Umar) from Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Bazzar (289), al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (1785) and al-Mu'afa bin Zakariyya in "al-Jalis al-Salih" (p. 375) narrated it through the chain of al-Minhal bin Bahr al-Qushayri from Hisham al-Dastuwa'i from Yahya bin Abi Kathir from Zayd bin Aslam. Imam al-'Uqayli said about al-Minhal bin Bahr: "There is reservation (nazar) about his hadith." Ibn Adi mentioned him in "al-Kamil" (6/331), cited a munkar hadith of his, and said: "Al-Minhal bin Bahr does not have many narrations."
Important point: Al-'Uqayli further says that this hadith is not preserved as a narration of Yahya bin Abi Kathir; rather it is known through the route of Muhammad bin Abi Humayd from Zayd bin Aslam, and no one other than al-Minhal bin Bahr reported it with the chain of Hisham from Yahya bin Abi Kathir.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): So said Imam al-'Uqayli, whereas Imam al-Bazzar says: "The trustworthy huffaz narrate it from Hisham from Yahya from Zayd bin Aslam from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) as 'mursal'! This hadith is known only from the narration of Muhammad bin Abi Humayd, and Muhammad bin Abi Humayd is one of the people of Madinah who is not strong; however, a group of trustworthy narrators transmitted hadiths from him and accepted his hadith (in corroborations)."
Note / Clarification: Al-Bazzar's words imply that trustworthy people did narrate it from Hisham, but al-Minhal is alone in reporting it as mawsul (with a connected chain). And Allah knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there are also narrations from Abd Allah bin Amr, Anas bin Malik and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), but their wording is: "Who among creation is the most wondrous in faith?" and the rest of the text is similar in meaning to the hadith of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: The hadith of Abd Allah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) was narrated by al-Hasan bin Arafah in his "Juz'" (19) through the chain of Isma'il bin Ayyash from al-Mughirah bin Qays al-Tamimi from Amr bin Shu'ayb from his father from his grandfather.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Through this same route it was narrated by al-Lalaka'i in "al-Sunnah" (1670, 1671), al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/538), al-Khatib in "Sharaf Ashab al-Hadith" (56), Qawam al-Sunnah in "al-Targhib" (48), Qadi al-Maristan in "al-Mashyakhah" (511) and Ibn Hajar in "al-Amali" (p. 38-39). Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar says after it: "This hadith is gharib; al-Mughirah bin Qays is a Basran whom Abu Hatim called munkar al-hadith, and Isma'il bin Ayyash is weak when he narrates from non-Syrians, and this narration is one of those; but it is strengthened by the preceding narration (i.e. the hadith of Umar)."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Bazzar (7294) narrated the hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) through the chain of Sa'id bin Bashir from Qatadah from Anas and called it "gharib". We say: Sa'id bin Bashir is weak but is considered in supporting reports, and Qatadah bin Di'amah al-Sadusi commits tadlis from Anas and did not state explicitly that he heard it here.
Reference / Source: The hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was narrated by Imam al-Tahawi in "Sharh al-Mushkil" (2472) and al-Tabarani (12560) through the chain of Muhammad bin Mu'awiyah from Khalaf bin Khalifah from Ata' bin al-Sa'ib from Amir al-Sha'bi from Ibn Abbas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Both Khalaf bin Khalifah and Ata' bin al-Sa'ib suffered ikhtilat (deterioration of memory) at the end of their lives, and al-Bazzar says: we know of no musnad narration of Ata' from al-Sha'bi other than this. Our strong assumption is that his narration from al-Sha'bi is 'mursal' (i.e. there is a break in the chain). And Allah knows best.
Grading: A similar narration was reported by Yunus bin Bukayr in his additions to "Sirat Ibn Ishaq" (438) (and through him al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" 6/538) from Malik bin Mighwal from Talhah bin Musarrif from Abu Salih Dhakwan al-Samman as 'mursal'.
Important point: The chain of this narration up to Dhakwan al-Samman is "hasan".
Important point: Muhammad bin Jabal al-Sulami narrated this report as 'mawsul' (with a chain) via Khalid bin Yazid al-Umari from Sufyan al-Thawri from Malik bin Mighwal from Talhah bin Musarrif from Abu Salih from Abu Hurayrah.
Reference / Source: This narration was recorded by Imam al-Isma'ili in his "Mu'jam" (168), al-Lalaka'i in "Usul al-I'tiqad" (1669), al-Sahmi in "Tarikh Jurjan" (p. 404) and Abu Nu'aym in "Tarikh Asbahan" (18/308-309).
Grading: The chain is very weak/fabricated.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrator Khalid bin Yazid al-Umari is accused of lying and fabricating hadith, so his narration is not acceptable, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar mentioned in "Lisan al-Mizan" (2910).
