Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts it has been distorted here and written as "'Ufuf" (which is not correct).
Important point: Ibn Asakir says in "Tarikh Dimashq" 23/318 that those who narrated it from al-Awza'i said "Salih bin Muhammad", but this was not corroborated; the correct name is "Salih bin Jubayr".
Note / Clarification: In al-Tabarani and Abu Nu'aym the editors have corrected it to "Salih bin Jubayr".
Grading: With these words this hadith is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Among its narrators, Salih bin Jubayr (whom al-Awza'i called Ibn Muhammad) is not well known; Imam al-Dhahabi said the same, and Abu Hatim declared him "majhul" (unknown), while Ibn Ma'in declared him trustworthy. Imam al-Awza'i fell into "idtirab" (inconsistency) in the chain of this narration and reported it through different intermediaries.

Reference / Source: Abu Mushir, Bishr bin Bakr al-Tinnisi, Abu Ya'la (1559) and Abd Allah bin Kathir all narrated it from Imam al-Awza'i (Abd al-Rahman bin Amr al-Awza'i) with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Walid bin Muslim, differing from the other narrators, mentioned "Abu Ubayd al-Hajib" (al-Madhhiji) as the intermediary between al-Awza'i and Salih bin Jubayr.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari, Ibn Qani', al-Tabarani and Abu Nu'aym narrated it through the chain of Marzuq bin Nafi' from Salih bin Jubayr.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Marzuq is a "majhul" (unknown) narrator; only Damrah bin Rabi'ah narrated from him, and no reliable imam declared him trustworthy.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari, al-Ruyani (1545), al-Tabarani (3540) and al-Dhahabi narrated it through the chain of Abd Allah bin Salih from Mu'awiyah bin Salih from Salih bin Jubayr from Abu Jum'ah (may Allah be pleased with him): "We were ten people with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), among them Mu'adh bin Jabal. We asked: Is there anyone greater in reward than us? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Rather, people who will come after you; they will see the Book (the Qur'an), believe in it and act upon it; they are greater than you in reward."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration the words "greater in reward" are reported in place of "better".
Important point: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar says in "Fath al-Bari" 11/13 that the narrators do not agree on the wording of this hadith of Abu Jum'ah; some narrated it with the word of "being better" and some with the words "greater in reward".
Grading: According to al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, the chain of the "greater in reward" narration is stronger than the chain of the "better than us" narration.
Important point: We say that (this preference) is for several reasons. The first is that this narration comes through Mu'awiyah bin Salih al-Hadrami, who is better known for narrating hadith than Usayd bin Abd al-Rahman. He is a thiqah (trustworthy) narrator whom Imam Muslim used as proof in his Sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): That it is narrated from Mu'awiyah bin Salih by Abd Allah bin Salih (the scribe of al-Layth) does not harm it, for al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani stated explicitly in "Hady al-Sari" (p. 441): those narrations of Abd Allah bin Salih that come through the experts of hadith (such as Yahya bin Ma'in, Imam al-Bukhari, Abu Zur'ah al-Razi and Abu Hatim al-Razi) are counted among his sahih hadiths, while judgement is suspended on what ordinary shaykhs narrate from him.
Important point: The second reason is that this narration of his agrees with the hadith of Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him), which comes later with the author at number (8110): "The one who acts in those days (of trials) will have the reward of fifty men who do deeds like yours."
General principle: A mere increase in reward does not entail superiority (of later people over the Companions), as is established by the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sahih al-Bukhari (3673) and Sahih Muslim (2541), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not revile my Companions, for if one of you were to spend (in the path of Allah) gold equal to Mount Uhud, it would not reach a 'mudd' (about half a kilogram) of one of them, nor half of it."
Important point: The third reason is that everyone who accepted Islam after the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) is in their scale (of good deeds), because the Companions are the great people who conquered the lands and spread Islam. So no one who comes later can attain their reward and rank.

Details of the narration: All four of these narrators (Abd al-Quddus, al-Walid, Yahya and Muhammad bin Mus'ab) narrate from Imam al-Awza'i, from Usayd bin Abd al-Rahman, from Khalid bin Durayk, from Abd Allah bin Muhayriz, who said: I said to Abu Jum'ah (Habib bin Siba'), a Companion of the Messenger (may Allah be pleased with him): Tell us a hadith you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Yes, I will tell you a fine hadith. We had the midday meal with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was with us. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Is there anyone better than us? We believed in you and waged jihad alongside you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, people who will come after you; they will believe in me though they have not seen me."
