Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7151

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the labor of the sawani (the camels used to draw water) became very hard for the Ansar. So they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he might supplicate for them or have a canal dug for them. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of their coming, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever you ask me for today will be given to you." When the Ansar heard this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they said: O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah for our forgiveness. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allahumma ighfir lil-Ansar, wa li-abna'i al-Ansar, wa li-abna'i abna'i al-Ansar' (O Allah, forgive the Ansar, the sons of the Ansar, and the grandsons of the Ansar).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All its narrators are thiqah except Abdullah bin Abi Yazid (also called Ibn Yazid) al-Mazini, from whom only two narrators narrated; however, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", and it is also authentically established through other routes.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad 20/ (13226) from Abd al-Samad bin Abd al-Warith, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad 19/ (12414) and al-Nasa'i (10073) by way of Thabit al-Bunani, from Anas.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in similar form at 20/ (13268) with the chain Ubaydullah bin Abi Bakr, from his father, from his grandfather (Anas), and at its end is this supplication: "O Allah, forgive the Ansar, the sons of the Ansar, and the sons of the sons of the Ansar." They said: O Messenger of Allah, and our children from others? He said: "And the children of the Ansar." They said: O Messenger of Allah, and our freedmen? He said: "And the freedmen of the Ansar."
Reference / Source: Ahmad also narrated it immediately after the previous narration (13268 M) by way of Umm al-Hakam bint al-Nu'man bin Suhban, that she heard Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate the like of this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), except that she added: "and the daughters-in-law of the Ansar".
Reference / Source: Without mention of the story it was narrated by Ahmad 20/ (12651), al-Nasa'i (8292) and Ibn Hibban (7280) by way of Qatadah; by Ahmad (12651 M) by way of Abu Qilabah; by Muslim (2507) (173) and Ibn Hibban (7282) by way of Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abi Talhah; and by al-Tirmidhi (3909) by way of Ata' bin al-Sa'ib; all of them narrate it from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Details of the narration: The narration of Qatadah and Abu Qilabah mentions "the Ansar, their sons and their grandsons". The narration of al-Nadr adds "the wives of the Ansar and their offspring". The narration of Ishaq mentions "the offspring of their offspring and their freedmen", while the narration of Ata' bin al-Sa'ib has the words "the women of the Ansar". Al-Tirmidhi declared the narration of Ata' "gharib" from this route.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari narrated it (4906) by way of Abdullah bin al-Fadl, that he heard Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "I grieved greatly for those who were killed at al-Harrah (the incident in Madinah), so Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to me (news of my intense grief had reached him), mentioning that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: O Allah, forgive the Ansar and the sons of the Ansar."
Important point: In this way it was made a hadith of the Musnad of Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Likewise Hammad bin Salamah (in Ibn Hibban (7281)) narrated it with the chain Thabit al-Bunani, from Abu Bakr bin Anas, that Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) to console him over his sons and family members who were killed on the day of al-Harrah, and wrote in his letter: "I give you glad tidings from Allah: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: O Allah, forgive the Ansar, their sons, their grandsons, the women of the Ansar, the women of their sons and the women of their grandsons."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Nadr bin Anas also narrated it, but there is disagreement among those who narrate it from him:
Details of the narration: Ahmad (20/ 12594) narrated it with the chain Harb bin Maymun, from al-Nadr bin Anas, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Qatadah (Sahih Muslim 2506 (172)) and Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an (al-Tirmidhi 3902) contradicted Harb bin Maymun; the two of them narrated it through al-Nadr bin Anas as marfu' from the Musnad of "Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him)".
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan sahih".

Reference / Source: In this connection see also the previous narration number (5875).
Note / Clarification: "Al-sawani" is the plural of saniyah, meaning the she-camel used to draw water.
Important point: The meaning is that the work of drawing water from wells and carrying it to the houses on these camels was very hard and exhausting for the Ansar.
