It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the last sermon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered to us, he said: "O community of Muhajirun, you will keep increasing (in number), while the Ansar have stopped (at their number). They are my close companions and confidants ('aybah) with whom I take refuge. So honor those of them who do good, and overlook those of them who err."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word is written like "is'aw" without dots, and in manuscript (Z) it carries a mark of doubt. In the other manuscripts the space here is blank; we have recorded the word from the sources of the takhrij.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are thiqah except that Sufyan bin Husayn has errors (awham) in his narrations from al-Zuhri, and this narration is one of them. He named the Companion of this hadith as Ka'b bin Malik, whereas narrators more reliable than him contradicted him and narrated it from "some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)", as will come. Reference / Source: It was narrated in full and in parts by Ibn Abi Asim (1712, 1713, 1743), al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna" (1737), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" 19/ (158) and Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (1085) and (1892) by various routes from Sufyan bin Husayn, with this chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it at 25/ (16075) by way of Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah, from al-Zuhri, from Abdullah bin Ka'b, from "some of the Companions". Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of Musnad Ahmad (21951), Ma'mar made an error by naming al-Zuhri's teacher as "Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b" (the brother of Abdullah). Here Ma'mar contradicted Sufyan and Shu'ayb. Important point: Ibn Sa'd (2/ 220), by way of al-Waqidi, reported this narration from Ma'mar himself (and Muhammad bin Abdullah) "correctly", i.e. from Abdullah bin Ka'b. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Anas (al-Bukhari 3801, Muslim 2510) is a supporting report for it: "The Ansar are my inner circle and my confidants. The people will increase and they will decrease, so accept from those of them who do good and overlook those of them who do wrong." Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The next hadith of Ibn Abbas is also a supporting report for it.
