Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the preposition "'an" (from) was distorted into "bin".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (M) and (S) the word here is "ila" (to).
Grading: This chain is "hasan" because of Asim bin Abi al-Najud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Asim is alone in narrating it with this wording (in definite form), whereas all the other narrations have the wording of "hope" (tarajji), i.e. "la'alla Allah" (Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do what you wish, I have forgiven you). (We will mention the words of al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar on this.)
Important point: "Abu Salih" in the chain is Dhakwan al-Samman.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Dawud (4654) from Musa bin Isma'il, and by Ibn Hibban (4798) by way of Abu Nasr al-Tammar (Abd al-Malik al-Qushayri); both of them report it from Hammad bin Salamah with this chain. The narration of Ibn Hibban is lengthy, with a story mentioned at its beginning.
Note / Clarification: In this connection also see the previous narrations numbered (5393) and (7142).
Reference / Source: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said in "Fath al-Bari" (12/ 60-61): What is meant here is to use the above-mentioned statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as evidence for the merit of the people of Badr, and it is a tremendous glad tiding that was granted to no one besides them.
Important point: This report has come with various wordings: "I have forgiven you" and "Paradise has become obligatory for you". All of them come with the words "la'alla Allah ittala'a" (perhaps Allah looked), but the scholars say that "la'alla" (perhaps) in the speech of Allah and His Messenger denotes certain occurrence.
Reference / Source: In Musnad Ahmad (7940), Abu Dawud (4654) and Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/ 155), in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, these words are in definite form: "Indeed Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do what you wish, I have forgiven you."
Grading: The marfu' hadith of Jabir (Musnad Ahmad 14484, 15262) has a chain meeting the condition of Muslim, and its wording is: "No one who witnessed Badr [and al-Hudaybiyah] will enter the Fire."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): An objection has been raised about the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) statement "Do what you wish", that its apparent meaning is permission (for everything), which is contrary to the principles of the Shari'ah.
Note / Clarification: It was answered that this is a statement about the past, i.e. all your previous deeds have been forgiven. But this was countered: if it referred to the past, it would not be valid to use it as evidence in the incident of Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah, since that incident took place six years after Badr. Hence it is established that what is meant is the advance forgiveness of future sins, and the past tense is used here for emphasis and to denote certain occurrence.
Important point: One view is that the imperative "i'malu" (do) here is only for their honour and esteem, and the purpose is that they will not be held to account for what issues from them (out of human nature) after that. They were given this distinction because of the great station that erased their previous sins and made them worthy of Allah forgiving them any future sin, should it occur.
Note / Clarification: One opinion is that their sins are forgiven as soon as they occur. Some said it is a glad tiding that no sins will issue from them at all, but this opinion does not seem correct, because Qudamah bin Maz'un (who was a Companion who fought at Badr) drank wine in the time of Umar and the prescribed punishment was applied to him. From the context of the story the second possibility (i.e. the promise of forgiveness should a sin occur) is clearer.
