Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7131

Amr bin Uthman bin Affan narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him) that he said to me: O my son, if you are ever made governor and put in charge of any affair of the people, then honor and respect Quraysh, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever humiliates Quraysh, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will disgrace him."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the words "Ibn Hafs" were mistakenly inserted here (they should not be part of the original text).

Grading: This narration may possibly be graded "hasan li-ghayrihi" (reaching the level of hasan on the strength of other supporting reports), although this chain in itself is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Hafs (the father of Ubaydullah) was mentioned by al-Bukhari and Ibn Abi Hatim, but they remained silent about him and mentioned no narrator from him other than his son. The same is the case with his paternal uncle Ubaydullah bin Umar bin Musa. Al-Uqayli said that he is not corroborated in his hadith, and al-Dhahabi declared him "layyin" (soft, i.e. weak) in "al-Mizan".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad 1/ (460), and by Ibn Hibban (6269) by way of Ishaq bin Isma'il al-Taliqani. Both of them narrate it from Ubaydullah bin Muhammad bin Hafs with this chain, and in the narration of Ahmad a story is also mentioned.
Grading: Al-Iraqi declared this hadith of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) "hasan" in "Mahajjat al-Qurab" p. 208.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The next hadith of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (coming with the author (al-Hakim)) serves as a supporting report (shahid) for it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Anas is also found with Ibn Abi Asim, al-Bazzar and others.
Important point: Although these narrations individually contain weakness, these three hadiths strengthen one another (which makes them acceptable).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): On this topic there is also a narration from Ibn Abbas, but its chain is "wahin" (extremely weak). In it is Abd al-Rahman bin Muslim (known as Abu Muslim al-Khurasani), about whom al-Dhahabi said: "He is not fit for anything to be narrated from him; he was worse than al-Hajjaj (bin Yusuf) and shed far more blood."
Reference / Source: From Amr bin al-As it was also narrated by Ibn Asakir, but its chain too is "wahin" (extremely weak).
