It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mujammi' bin Jariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the times of prayer, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer (on one day) at the beginning of its time and (on another day) at the end of its time, and said: "Between these two is the time."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscript copies the name "Bahr al-Barri" has been distorted into "Yahya al-Barni", whereas the correct name is "Bahr al-Barri", as established from al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's book "Ithaf al-Maharah" (16490). Note / Clarification: The narration of Abu Abd Allah al-Zahid from al-Hasan bin Ali bin Bahr al-Barri occurs in more than ten places in this book.
Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (sahih due to other supporting reports), though this particular chain is weak because Ubayd Allah bin Abd Allah is majhul (unknown). Reference / Source: Waki' Muhammad bin Khalaf recorded it in "Akhbar al-Qudat" 1/134, and al-Daraqutni (1024), by way of Ja'far bin Abi Uthman, from Abu Ya'la Muhammad bin al-Salt, with this same chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In support of this narration one may cite the hadith of Buraydah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) recorded by Muslim (613), and the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) recorded there as well (614). Likewise, the hadiths that preceded with the author (al-Hakim) also serve as supporting reports for it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Tahdhib al-Tahdhib", in the biography of Ubayd Allah bin Abd Allah bin Tha'labah al-Ansari, that al-Hakim's claim that he is "the son of Tha'labah bin Su'ayr" is not correct.
