Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7128

Ubayd bin Rifa'ah bin Rafi' al-Zuraqi narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather (Rifa'ah bin Rafi', may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Umar, gather your people (Quraysh) for me." So he gathered them, then he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have gathered them. Shall they come in to you, or will you come out to them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, I will come out to them." When the Muhajirun and the Ansar heard this, they said: Surely some revelation has come down concerning Quraysh. So the onlookers and listeners came to hear what would be said to them. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among them and asked: "Is there anyone among you other than yourselves?" They said: Yes, among us are our allies, our sisters' sons and our freed slaves (mawali). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Our allies are from us, our sisters' sons are from us, and our mawali are from us." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen! My friends among you are those who are God-fearing. If you are those, then well and good; otherwise, look to yourselves, and look well, lest people come (on the Day of Resurrection) with deeds while you come with burdens (of sin), and you are turned away from." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called out in a loud voice and said three times: "Indeed, Quraysh are a trustworthy people. Whoever seeks out their stumbles (or tries to harm them), Allah will throw him down on his nose."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets had dropped out of the manuscripts; we have restored it with the help of the sources of the takhrij.

Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is that Isma'il bin Ubayd bin Rifa'ah is "majhul" (unknown). Sufyan in the chain is "Sufyan bin Sa'id al-Thawri". However, parts of this narration have supporting reports (shawahid), which will be mentioned below.
Reference / Source: This narration was narrated in full and in abridged form by Ibn Abi Shaybah 12/ 167, Ahmad 31/ (18992, 18993), Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Sunnah" (1507) and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (4547) by way of Waki', from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain.
Details of the narration: This narration has already appeared in abridged form with the author (al-Hakim) (number 3305), by way of Abu Hudhayfah al-Nahdi, from Sufyan al-Thawri.
Reference / Source: It was narrated (in full and in abridged form) by Ahmad (18994), al-Bukhari in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (75), al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (3725), al-Baghawi in "al-Sahabah" (681), al-Tabarani (4544, 4545, 4546) and al-Bayhaqi in "Ma'rifat al-Sunan" (221) by various routes from Abdullah bin Uthman bin Khuthaym.
Important point: Al-Bazzar said: As far as we know, only Rifa'ah bin Rafi' narrates it with this wording, and this route from him is among the good (hisan) chains narrated on this topic.
Details of the narration: Ma'mar narrated it in "al-Jami'" (19897) by way of Ibn Khuthaym, from a man of the Ansar, from his father.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His (peace and blessings be upon him) statement, "The sons of our sisters and our freedmen are from us", is authentically established. In the hadith of Anas bin Malik the wording is: "The son of a people's sister is one of them (or: of themselves)", and "The freedman of a people is of themselves (i.e. part of them)". Both narrations were recorded by al-Bukhari (6762 and 6761) and others.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His (peace and blessings be upon him) statement, "My allies (awliya') are only the God-fearing", has a supporting report in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, over which there is disagreement as to whether it is "connected" (mawsul) or "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (1769) that there was disagreement among those narrating it from Muhammad bin Amr: Muhammad bin Fulayh, Isa bin Yunus and others narrated it as "connected" (from Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah), while Isma'il bin Ja'far and Khalid al-Wasiti narrated it as "mursal" (from Abu Salamah), and the mursal narration is more correct.
Reference / Source: From Abdullah bin Umar this narration is also found with Ahmad 10/ (6168) and Abu Dawud (4242), and there is also disagreement over whether it is connected or mursal.
Note / Clarification: This narration will come with the author (al-Hakim) under number (8647), but without the words "My allies are only the God-fearing"; see the discussion of it there.
