It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Jibril (peace be upon him) led the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in prayer twice near the House (the Ka'bah). (On the first day) he led him in Zuhr when the sun had declined and the shadow was the size of a sandal strap; then Asr when the shadow of everything was equal to it; Maghrib at the time the fasting person breaks his fast (that is, as soon as the sun sets); Isha when the twilight had disappeared; and Fajr at the time food and drink become forbidden for the fasting person. The next day he led Zuhr when the shadow was equal to one's length (that is, at the time of the previous day's Asr), Asr when the shadow was twice one's length, Maghrib at the same time the fasting person breaks his fast (that is, there was no change in it), Isha when a third of the night had passed, and Fajr when it had become fully light (isfar). Then he said: "O Muhammad, this is the time of the Prophets before you; and the (actual) time is between these two times."

Grading: And al-Tirmidhi said that this hadith is hasan.
Note / Clarification: The words of the hadith "kanat qadr al-shirak" mean that (at the time of zawal) the shadow had shrunk to the width of a sandal strap. 'Shirak' refers to the leather straps or laces of the sandal that lie on its upper part.
