Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, but, according to a group of scholars, with "Umm Kulthum" mentioned instead of "Zaynab". The narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Abu Hatim" is Imam Muhammad bin Idris al-Razi, and "'Isa bin Yunus" is al-Sabi'i.
Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi narrated it in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (4840) and "Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar" (4/254) by way of Abu Umayyah al-Tarsusi Muhammad bin Ibrahim, from 'Abd Allah bin Ja'far al-Raqqi, with this chain, but he did not give its wording.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by 'Abd al-Razzaq (19945), Ibn Majah (3598), Ibn Abi 'Asim (2973), al-Nasa'i (9503), Abu Ya'la (3586) and al-Tahawi in "Sharh al-Mushkil" (4841) and "Sharh al-Ma'ani", through various routes from "Ma'mar" alone, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group of al-Zuhri's students differed from (the narrators) al-Awza'i and Ma'mar; they narrated it from al-Zuhri, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that: "He saw on Umm Kulthum (the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) a striped silk garment (hullah siyara')."
Details of the narration: Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah narrated it in this way, in al-Bukhari (5842) and al-Nasa'i (9505).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Muhammad bin al-Walid al-Zubaydi in Abu Dawud (4058) and al-Nasa'i (9504), and al-Hakim in the upcoming narration number (7034); Ibn Jurayj in al-Nasa'i (9506); Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari in al-Nasa'i (9507); Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah bin Abi 'Atiq in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" 22/(1064) and "al-Awsat" (4610); and 'Ubayd Allah bin Abi Ziyad in al-Hakim (7034) and al-Bayhaqi 2/425. All six of them narrate it from al-Zuhri.
Grading: Imam al-Nasa'i said: This (the Umm Kulthum narration) is closer to being correct than the one before it (the narration of Ma'mar).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari likewise said in "al-Tarikh al-Awsat": Ma'mar narrated from al-Zuhri, from Anas: "He saw on Zaynab the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)", but "Umm Kulthum" is more correct.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (2598): The correct one is the statement of those who said "Umm Kulthum". Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Fath al-Bari" 18/97: What is preserved (mahfuz) is what the majority said.
Note / Clarification: Explanation of the word "siyara'": Ibn al-Athir wrote in "al-Nihayah fi al-Gharib" under the root (s-y-r) that it (with a kasrah on the sin, a fathah on the ya' and a madd) is a kind of striped cloak mixed with silk that looks like straps (suyur).
General principle: It is on the pattern "fi'ala'", derived from "al-sayr" (a leather strap). It is narrated thus as an adjective. Some later scholars said that it is "hullatu siyara'" in the construct (idafah) form, and argued that according to Sibawayh the pattern "fi'ala'" does not occur as an adjective but only as a noun. It has also been explained as pure silk, meaning a silk garment.
