Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our handwritten manuscripts this name had been corrupted into "'Umar".
Reference / Source: The correct name is established from al-Khalifah al-Naysaburi's "Talkhis Tarikh Naysabur" (p. 76) and al-Dhahabi's "Tarikh al-Islam" (8/122); he is "Ahmad bin al-Hasan bin 'Ali bin Mandah al-Asbahani".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the word "bin" was inserted here, turning it into "Ibn Shadhan", whereas "Shadhan" is his laqab (nickname).
Reference / Source: As in Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (2/211); also see Ibn Hajar's "Nuzhat al-Albab fi al-Alqab" (1615).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the handwritten manuscripts this name had been corrupted into "Sa'id"; we have corrected it to "Sa'd" from the biographical works.
Reference / Source: See Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (4/86), Ibn Hibban's "al-Thiqat" (6/378) and "Siyar al-Nubala'" (9/317).
Details of the narration: He is a Bajali from Kufah, the maternal grandfather (his mother's father) of Shadhan. As for "Sa'id bin al-Salt", he is a different person, an Egyptian; Ibn Abi Hatim also gave his biography in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (4/34), as did al-Bukhari (3/483).
Grading: This hadith is "hasan" by virtue of its routes, in sha' Allah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in the narrators of this chain except al-Hakim's shaykh, who is majhul (unknown), but he has been corroborated.
Note / Clarification: "Abu Sufyan" is Talhah bin Nafi'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Daraqutni in "al-'Ilal" (2679) declared this hadith defective due to idtirab (inconsistency). He said: It is narrated by al-A'mash, and there is disagreement over him; Sa'd bin al-Salt narrated it from al-A'mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: We say: Besides the author, this route was narrated by Ibn Abi Dawud in "al-Ba'th" (8), and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir in his "Mu'jam" (142), Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Mawdu'at" (1769) and "al-'Ilal al-Mutanahiyah" (1517), and al-Dhahabi in "Tadhkirat al-Huffaz" (4/117).
Details of the narration: Then al-Daraqutni said: Habib bin Khalid al-Asadi differed from him (Sa'd); he narrated it from al-A'mash, from 'Abd Allah bin al-Mughirah, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: We say: Abu 'Awanah narrated this route in his "Sahih" (as in al-Suyuti's "al-La'ali' al-Masnu'ah" 2/361), as did al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (745) and 22/(1054).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): About Habib bin Khalid al-Asadi, Abu Hatim said: He is not strong; and we do not know 'Abd Allah bin al-Mughirah.
Details of the narration: Then al-Daraqutni said: Abu Hamzah al-Sukkari narrated it from al-A'mash, from Sulayman, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). We say: Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis narrated this route in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (249), Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Mawdu'at" (1768) and in his book "al-Muqliq" (88), and al-Diya' in "al-Mukhtarah" 6/(2162), by way of 'Ali bin al-Hasan bin Shaqiq, from Abu Hamzah.
Important point: Its wording is: "I remembered my daughter's frailty and the severity of the punishment of the grave, then (an angel) came to me and I was told that it had been lightened for her; yet she was squeezed with a squeeze whose sound was heard between the east and the west (al-khafiqayn)."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In some manuscripts of Ibn al-Jawzi's "al-Mawdu'at" the name "Sulayman" has dropped out between al-A'mash and Anas, whereas in his book "al-Muqliq" it is correctly mentioned, and there he named him "Sulayman bin al-Mughirah"; Muslim bin al-Hajjaj also named him thus in some of his books, as al-Daraqutni quoted from him in "al-'Ilal". If it is preserved that this Sulayman is "Ibn al-Mughirah", then he is younger than al-A'mash and did not meet Anas (may Allah be pleased with him); otherwise we do not know him. Apparently it is a wahm (error).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has another source: Abu 'Awanah narrated it in his "Sahih" (as in al-La'ali' al-Masnu'ah 2/361), and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" 22/(1055) and "al-Awsat" (5810), by way of Ishaq bin Sulayman al-Razi, from Sa'id bin Masruq, from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When Zaynab, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), died, grief appeared on the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then it lifted from him. We said: O Messenger of Allah, we saw you grieved, then it lifted from you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I saw Zaynab and her frailty; it has been made easy for her, yet despite that she was squeezed with a squeeze that reached the east and the west."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani said: No one narrated it from Sa'id bin Masruq except Zakariyya bin Sallam, and Ishaq bin Sulayman is alone in narrating it. We say: Its narrators are on the whole acceptable, but Sa'id bin Masruq is not known to have heard from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), just as al-Dhahabi in "Tarikh al-Islam" (3/865) expressed doubt that Ishaq bin Sulayman met him (Sa'id).
Details of the narration: Ibn al-Jawzi narrated it in "al-Mawdu'at" (1770) and "al-'Ilal al-Mutanahiyah" (1518) by way of Mu'awiyah al-'Absi, from Zadhan Abu 'Umar, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) buried his daughter, he sat by the grave and his face darkened, then it lifted from him. His Companions asked him about that, and he said: "I remembered my daughter, her frailty and the punishment of the grave, so I supplicated to Allah and He relieved her. By Allah, she was pressed with a pressing heard between the east and the west."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We do not know the narrator named Mu'awiyah al-'Absi in it.
