It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), granted protection to her husband Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' (when he was a polytheist and had fallen into the hands of the Muslims), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) upheld the protection she had given and declared it valid.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: There is no harm in its narrators ("la ba'sa bihim"). Technical note / Defect ('illah): But the correct position is that in this chain, between "'Abd Allah bin al-Samh" and "'Uqayl bin Khalid", there is a narrator, "'Abbad bin Kathir al-Thaqafi", as a group narrated it from Yahya bin Bukayr with al-Tabarani; and this 'Abbad is "matruk" (abandoned). Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (22/1048) and "al-Awsat" (9006) through various routes from Yahya bin Bukayr, from 'Abd Allah bin al-Samh, from 'Abbad bin Kathir, from 'Uqayl, from Ibn Shihab, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq (12649) narrated it at length from Ibn Jurayj, from an unnamed man, from Ibn Shihab, and mentioned it as "mursal". Note / Clarification: On the validity of Muslims granting protection binding on one another, see the previous hadiths with the author from 'Ali, Abu Hurayrah and 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with them) at numbers (2680), (2681) and (2683). Also see the hadith of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), which comes after the next hadith.
