Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fajr is of two kinds: one that rises (upwards) like the tail of a wolf; in it prayer is not permitted, nor is food forbidden. The other spreads out across the horizon; it makes prayer permitted and food forbidden."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is jayyid (good), but there is a disagreement over whether it is mawsul or mursal, and the mursal narration is the more correct, as will be made clear. Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ibn Abi Dhi'b' is Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Mughirah al-Qurashi. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan" 1/ 377 from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd Allah bin Rawh was contradicted in his connecting it from Yazid bin Harun by Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Hassani (Sunan al-Daraqutni 1053), who narrated it from Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Thawban, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as mursal. Al-Daraqutni declared al-Hassani thiqah, as in "Tarikh Baghdad" 2/ 360, and according to al-Bayhaqi the mursal narration is the more correct. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah 3/ 27, al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 2/ 173, and al-Bayhaqi at 1/ 377 and 4/ 215 narrated it through five different routes from Ibn Abi Dhi'b, from his maternal uncle al-Harith bin Abd al-Rahman, from Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Thawban, as mursal. Note / Clarification: In "Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah" only 'from Thawban' was mistakenly printed and the name 'Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman' dropped out, which is a clear error. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter there is also a narration similar to this hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), from Abd al-Rahman bin A'ish (al-Daraqutni 2183). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Daraqutni graded its chain sahih; however, there is disagreement over whether Abd al-Rahman bin A'ish was a Companion. Reference / Source: For further study see hadiths (2346-2348) of "Sunan Abi Dawud". Note / Clarification: 'Sirhan' is a name for the wolf. (The light of the false dawn) is likened to its tail because, like the tail, it is long and thin.
