Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 699

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fajr is of two kinds: one Fajr in which food becomes forbidden and prayer becomes permitted, and another Fajr in which prayer is forbidden and food remains permitted."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim with regard to the reliability of its narrators. Imam al-Hakim says: I have also seen it as mawquf (a Companion's statement), and Allah knows best.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The preponderant view is that it is sahih as mawquf on Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), i.e. as his own saying, as will come.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri (Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr al-Asadi), despite being thiqah, makes errors (awham), especially in the narrations of Sufyan al-Thawri, as Imam Ahmad mentioned.
Note / Clarification: This hadith will come again at number (1563).
Reference / Source: This hadith is in "Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah" (356) and (1927), and through it al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan" 4/ 216 and al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" 4/ 95-96.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bayhaqi said that Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated it as marfu' (musnad), while other narrators narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri as mawquf on Ibn Abbas. Al-Khatib said that no one other than Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri as marfu'.
Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni (2185) narrated it from Abu Bakr al-Naysaburi, from Muhammad bin Ali bin Muhriz.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Daraqutni said that no one other than Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri as marfu', whereas al-Firyabi and others kept it mawquf. The students of Ibn Jurayj also narrated it from him as mawquf.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it at 1/ 377 and 457 via Amr al-Naqid, from Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri.
Grading: Al-Bayhaqi said that Abu Ahmad narrated it as musnad (marfu') while others narrated it as mawquf, and that the mawquf version is more correct.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it at 1/ 377 via al-Husayn bin Hafs, from Sufyan al-Thawri, as mawquf.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Husayn bin Hafs was also corroborated (mutaba'ah) by Abd Allah bin al-Walid al-Adani, as the author (al-Hakim) will mention later.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq in his "Musannaf" (4765), and Rawh bin Ubadah in "Tafsir al-Tabari" 2/ 173, narrated it from Ibn Jurayj as mawquf.
Important point: All these routes support the mawquf narration of al-Husayn bin Hafs from Sufyan al-Thawri.
