Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the handwritten manuscripts this name has been corrupted and written as "Abd Allah".
Grading: With this wording the chain is weak, because of the weakness of Muhammad bin Abi Layla.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator was inconsistent (idtirab) in narrating it: sometimes he makes it a hadith of Jabir, sometimes of Jabir from 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf, and sometimes of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), as al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (2887).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, the second part of this hadith has a sahih shahid (supporting report) of similar meaning, which will come, and part of the first part also has a shahid that could possibly raise it to hasan.
Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi narrated it in "Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar" (4/293) by way of Ahmad bin 'Abd Allah bin Yunus, from Isra'il, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (al-Tabaqat 1/114), Ibn Abi al-Dunya (Dhamm al-Malahi 62), al-Bazzar (Musnad 1001), al-Ajurri (Tahrim al-Nard 64 and al-Arba'un 40) and al-Bayhaqi (Shu'ab al-Iman 9684) narrated it through various routes from Muhammad bin Abi Layla.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Bazzar said: "To our knowledge this hadith is not narrated from 'Abd al-Rahman (bin 'Awf) except by this route with this chain; however, part of this speech has been narrated from 'Abd al-Rahman with another chain."
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah (3/290, 393), 'Abd bin Humayd (1006), al-Tirmidhi (1005), al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi (al-Manhiyyat p. 87), Ibn Hibban (al-Majruhin 2/245-246), al-Bayhaqi (al-Sunan al-Kubra 4/69 and al-Shu'ab 9685) and al-Baghawi (Sharh al-Sunnah 1530) through various routes with the chain "Ibn Abi Layla from 'Ata' from Jabir". 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf is not mentioned in it.
Grading / Criticism: Ibn Hibban said after it: I heard Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Sa'di say, after reading this report: "Even if Ibn Abi Layla had narrated nothing but this hadith, he would deserve to have his hadith abandoned."
Details of the narration: Aban bin Bashir al-Muktib narrated it, as found with Ibn al-Jawzi in "Talbis Iblis" (p. 208), from Ibn Abi Layla, from 'Ata', from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): About Aban, Ibn Abi Hatim said: "He is majhul (unknown)" (as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar quoted in Lisan al-Mizan 1/220); although Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", al-Daraqutni in "al-'Ilal" considered this narration a "wahm" (error by a narrator).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Part of the first half of the hadith is supported by the marfu' narration of Anas: "Two sounds are cursed: the sound of a flute (mizmar) at a time of blessing, and the sound of wailing (wayl) at a time of calamity." (al-Bazzar 7513, Qiwam al-Sunnah al-Asbahani in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" 2433, al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" 2200 and 2201).
Grading: Its chain could possibly be graded hasan, in sha' Allah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibn 'Adi narrated something similar in "al-Kamil" (6/130) as a hadith of Ibn 'Abbas, with a chain that is of no value, as it contains Muhammad bin Ziyad al-Yashkuri, who is accused of fabricating hadith. The second part of the hadith is also supported by the hadith of Anas, who said: "We entered with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) upon Abu Sayf the blacksmith, who was the husband of Ibrahim's wet-nurse. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took Ibrahim, kissed him and smelled him. Then we entered upon him after that while Ibrahim was breathing his last, and the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to shed tears. 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf said to him: Even you, O Messenger of Allah? He said: O Ibn 'Awf, it is mercy. Then he followed it with more and said (peace and blessings be upon him): The eye sheds tears and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord, and indeed, O Ibrahim, we are grieved by your parting." Al-Bukhari narrated it (1303), and the wording is his, as did Muslim (2315).
