It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the name of Sayyidah Maymunah was formerly "Barrah", and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed it and named her "Maymunah".

Grading: This hadith is "sahih" with the mention of "Juwayriyah", not "Maymunah". The narrators of this chain are thiqah, but Isra'il (bin Yunus al-Sabi'i) was alone in calling her "Maymunah" (which is a mistake). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The other students of Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman (Ibn 'Ubayd, the freedman of the family of Talhah) contradicted Isra'il and narrated it from him with the word "Juwayriyah". Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Khaythamah narrated it in the third part of his "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/ 84) — and by way of him Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 937) — from 'Asim bin Yusuf al-Yarbu'i, from Isra'il, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah (in Ahmad: 4/ 2334, Muslim: 2140, Abu Dawud: 1503), Shu'bah (in Ibn Hibban: 5829) and 'Abd al-Rahman al-Mas'udi (in Ahmad: 5/ 2900, 3005, 3308) contradicted Isra'il. All three narrated it from Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Talhi with the name "Juwayriyah" in place of "Maymunah". Details of the narration: Sufyan and al-Mas'udi added in their narration: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out while she was at her place of prayer, and when he returned she was still there (engaged in remembrance). He asked: "Have you remained at this place of prayer of yours (since I left)?" She said: "Yes." He said: "After leaving you I said four phrases three times; if they were weighed against all that you have said, they would outweigh it: Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him, as many times as the number of His creation, as much as pleases Him, as much as the weight of His Throne, and as much as the ink of His words." Note / Clarification: The hadith of Zaynab bint Abi Salamah from Juwayriyah has already passed with the author (al-Hakim) under number (6950): "Her (Juwayriyah's) name was Barrah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed it."
