Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6960

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the name of Sayyidah Maymunah was formerly "Barrah", and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed it and named her "Maymunah".
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it; and it has a corroborating report (shahid) narrated with a sahih chain.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is "sahih" with the mention of "Zaynab" (bint Jahsh), not with the mention of "Maymunah", although the narrators of this chain are thiqah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement from Shu'bah over the name of the woman in the story: 'Amr bin Marzuq in al-Bukhari's "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (832), Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the third part of his "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/ 84), and the author (al-Hakim) in this narration reported it from Shu'bah with the word "Maymunah". Whereas Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi (2567) and 'Abd al-Samad bin 'Abd al-Warith in Ibn Rahawayh's "Musnad" (26) narrated it from Shu'bah with doubt: "The name of Zaynab or Maymunah was Barrah … etc."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Most of Shu'bah's students contradicted them (i.e. 'Amr bin Marzuq and others) and narrated it with the correct name, "Zaynab".
Reference / Source: Thus Ahmad (15/ 9560, 16/ 9914), al-Bukhari (6192), Muslim (2141), Ibn Majah (3732) and Ibn Hibban (5830) narrated it (with the name Zaynab) through various routes from Shu'bah.
