Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6940

It is narrated from Amir that Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) used to say to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I have a greater right over you than all your wives: my marriage was the best of them, my envoy was the most honoured, and I am the closest to you in kinship." Then she would say: "The Most Merciful, the Mighty and Majestic, married me to you from above His Throne, and Jibril (peace be upon him) was its envoy; and I am the daughter of your paternal aunt, and none of your wives besides me is so closely related to you." (As I have mentioned, her mother Umaymah bint Abd al-Muttalib was the paternal aunt of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).)

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: Thus in manuscript (Z), which marked it with a "dabbah" (a sign of doubt), and in manuscript (B): "'Amir"; while in manuscripts (M) and (S) there is a blank space in its place.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Manuscripts (Z) and (B) have "wa-alzamahunna sitran" and (M) and (S) have "wa-akramahunna sitran"; both are corruptions of "safiran" (envoy). It has been corrected from Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi's "Jami' al-Athar fi al-Siyar" (7/ 142), since he quoted it from "Mustadrak al-Hakim", and this agrees with the narration of Qiwam al-Sunnah whose sourcing comes below.

Grading: Its chain is "da'if".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ali bin 'Asim (al-Wasiti) is "layyin" (soft, somewhat weak), though he has been corroborated. And the narration of 'Amir (al-Sha'bi) from Zaynab is "mursal", as Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi (7/ 142) said.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tarikh" (11/ 608), and Qiwam al-Sunnah in "al-Hujjah fi Bayan al-Mahajjah" (451) and Ibn Qudamah in "Ithbat Sifat al-'Uluww" (17) narrated it by way of 'Abd al-Samad bin 'Ali bin Mukarram; both of them (al-Tabari and Ibn Mukarram) narrate it from al-Harith bin Muhammad bin Dahir al-Tamimi — who is Ibn Abi Usamah — with this same chain. Ibn Abi Usamah's name has dropped out of the book "al-Hujjah".
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated in his "Tafsir" (22/ 14) from Muhammad bin Humayd, from Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid, from Mughirah bin Miqsam, from al-Sha'bi, who said: Zaynab, the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), used to say to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I can take pride before you in three things that none of your other wives can take pride in: my grandfather and your grandfather are one; Allah married me to you from the heaven; and the envoy (of this marriage) was Jibril (peace be upon him)."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from Anas bin Malik in al-Bukhari (7420), in which Zaynab used to take pride over the other wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: "Your families married you off, while Allah married me from above the seven heavens."
