Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This chain is "da'if"; al-Waqidi (Muhammad bin Umar) and his teacher are both weak.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (11/ 604) via al-Waqidi, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is contradicted by what Ibn Sa'd (10/ 93) narrated, also from al-Waqidi, from Abd Allah bin Nafi', from his father, who said: Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), died in the year 59, and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) led the funeral prayer over her at al-Baqi'.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (10/ 93) also narrated from al-Waqidi, from Ibn Jurayj, from Nafi', who said: Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) led the funeral prayer over Umm Salamah at al-Baqi'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi said in "Tarikh al-Islam" (2/ 743): (The report of) al-Waqidi from Ibn Jurayj from Nafi', who said: Abu Hurayrah led the funeral prayer over Umm Salamah - this is one of al-Waqidi's mistakes, for Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) died before her.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Isabah": Al-Waqidi said: She died in Shawwal of the year 59, Abu Hurayrah led the funeral prayer over her, and she was 84 years old. So he said, and a group took it from him, but it is not sound, for it is established in "Sahih Muslim" (2882) that al-Harith bin Abd Allah bin Abi Rabi'ah and Abd Allah bin Safwan entered upon Umm Salamah during the rule of Yazid bin Mu'awiyah and asked her about the army that will be swallowed up by the earth (the hadith). And Yazid's rule began after the death of his father in the year 60 (so Umm Salamah was alive at that time).
Important point: Ibn Hibban said: She died at the end of the year 61, after the news of the killing of al-Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) reached her. (Ibn Hajar says:) I say: This is closer (to the truth).
Details of the narration: Muharib bin Dithar said: Umm Salamah left instructions that Sa'id bin Zayd should lead the funeral prayer over her; the governor of Madinah at that time was Marwan bin al-Hakam, and it is also said: al-Walid bin Utbah bin Abi Sufyan.
Important point: (Ibn Hajar says:) I say: The second (view) is closer, for Sa'id bin Zayd died before the date of Umm Salamah's death according to all the views; so it seems that she had left instructions for Sa'id to lead the prayer over her during an illness she suffered, then she recovered, and Sa'id died before her.
Note / Clarification: We say: the narration of Muharib bin Dithar that Ibn Hajar mentioned will be brought by the author (al-Hakim) shortly under number (6922); see our comment on it there.
