Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6915

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin Abi Salamah bin Abd al-Asad (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: My father took part in the battle of Uhud, and Abu Usamah al-Jushami struck him in the upper arm with an arrow. He treated his wound for a month and then the wound healed. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent my father (on an expedition) to Qatan in Muharram, at the start of the thirty-fifth month after the Hijrah. He was away for twenty-nine nights, then he returned to Madinah on 8 Safar 4 AH, and the old wound opened up again, because of which he passed away on 8 Jumada al-Akhirah 4 AH. Then my mother observed her waiting period, and she completed her waiting period when ten nights remained of Shawwal 4 AH, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married her in the last days of Shawwal 4 AH. Then the people of Madinah said: An Arab widow came to the leader of Islam and the Muslims as a bride at the beginning of the evening, and in the last part of the night she got up and began grinding at the hand mill; and she was the Mother of the Believers Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) (The word "Qatan") is read with vowelled letters ("Qatan") as in "Marasid al-Ittila'" (3/ 1108), where the author says: It is a mountain of Banu Asad; while in "Maghazi al-Waqidi" (1/ 342) it is one of the waters (springs) of Banu Asad.

Note / Clarification: (2) The text from his words "and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married her" up to here has dropped out of manuscripts (M) and (S).
Reference / Source: This report was narrated by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 221 and 10/ 85) - and via him al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (11/ 603-604) - from al-Waqidi, with this chain. Ibn Sa'd's first narration has some differences; in it is "Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'id" instead of "Sa'id bin Abd al-Rahman".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Waqidi's teacher in this chain, Umar bin Uthman, is "majhul", and likewise his teacher Abd al-Malik bin Ubayd (Ibn Sa'id al-Makhzumi) is "majhul al-hal".

Reference / Source: (3) It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd (10/ 90) - and via him al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (11/ 604) - from al-Waqidi, from Kathir bin Zayd, from al-Muttalib bin Abd Allah bin Hantab, who said: "The widow of the Arabs (Umm Salamah) entered upon the master of the Muslims (the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him) as a bride at the beginning of the night, and rose in the last part of the night to grind (grain)."
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9955) via Sulayman bin Bilal, from Kathir bin Zayd, from al-Muttalib bin Abd Allah; then he mentioned it.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan".
