Grading: (1) Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (8/ 2556-2557) from Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj, from Abd Allah bin Khirash, from al-Awwam bin Hawshab, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd Allah bin Khirash is "da'if jiddan" (very weak).
Reference / Source: This report was narrated by Ibn Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (1/ 338-339), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (18/ 104) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (23/ 234) via Hushaym bin Bashir, from al-Awwam bin Hawshab, from an elder of Banu Asad, from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): that he recited Surat al-Nur and explained it, and when he reached the verse that mentions curse in this world and the Hereafter and a great punishment for those who accuse chaste, unaware believing women (al-Nur: 23), he said: This verse concerns Aishah and the wives of the Prophet, and Allah did not leave room for repentance for one who does that, whereas He kept repentance for those who accuse ordinary believing women. Then he recited verses 4 and 5 of the same surah, which mention Allah's forgiveness for those who repent and reform. Ibn Abbas made clear that for one who slanders the wives of the Prophet there is curse, and no repentance is mentioned for him. Upon hearing this, some of the people were about to get up to Ibn Abbas to kiss his head for the excellence of his explanation.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The intermediary between al-Awwam bin Hawshab and Ibn Abbas is a man of Banu Asad, and in al-Tabarani's narration he is called a man of "Banu Kahil", and Kahil is itself a branch of Asad bin Khuzaymah.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani (23/ 232) narrated via Atiyyah al-Awfi from Ibn Abbas that this verse refers to the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whom the hypocrites accused, so Allah made curse and wrath binding upon them (the hypocrites); all of that concerns the wives of the Prophet.
Grading: In its chain there is more than one weak narrator.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Shabbah (1/ 338), al-Tabari (18/ 76, 103) and al-Tabarani (23/ 226, 227) via Khusayf, who said that he asked Sa'id bin Jubayr: Which is graver, zina or accusing a chaste woman? He replied: Zina. I said: But Allah says: "Indeed, those who accuse chaste, unaware believing women" (al-Nur: 23)? He said: This was revealed specifically concerning Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain is da'if on account of Khusayf bin Abd al-Rahman al-Jazari, but through the other route in al-Tabarani (23/ 228), Ibn Lahi'ah from Ata' bin Dinar from Sa'id bin Jubayr, this narration rises to the level of "hasan".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (41/ 24720), Abd bin Humayd (1520), al-Tabari (18/ 103-104) and al-Tabarani (23/ 156) narrated via Umar bin Abi Salamah from his father that Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I was accused of what I was accused of while I was entirely unaware. Meanwhile the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting with me when revelation came to him. Whenever revelation came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), something like drowsiness would overtake him. Then, when the revelation was complete, he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped his face and said: O Aishah, rejoice. I said: With the praise of Allah, not with your praise. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: 'Indeed, those who accuse chaste, unaware believing women' to the end of the two verses."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Umar bin Abi Salamah (al-Zuhri) is da'if, and it is established from the sahih narrations that the verses that were revealed begin with "Inna alladhina ja'u bi al-ifki usbatun minkum" (verse 11), as is explained in the "Musnad".
