Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This report is sahih, but this chain is munqati' (broken) between Mus'ab bin Sa'd and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); it will come in connected (mawsul) form in the next narration, but the mursal is more correct.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mutarrif: he is Ibn Tarif; and Abu Ishaq: he is Amr bin Abdullah al-Sabi'i. See also "Ilal al-Daraqutni" (226).
Reference / Source: It was narrated at length and in abridged form by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" 10/ 66, al-Khara'iti in "I'tilal al-Qulub" (25) - and through his route al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" 5/ 100 - and al-Mahamili in "al-Amali" (the transmission of al-Bayyi') (242) through several routes from Asbat bin Muhammad, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was likewise narrated at length and in abridged form by Abu Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam in "al-Amwal" (554), Ibn Abi Shaybah 12/ 302, and Ibn Zanjawayh in "al-Amwal" (803) and (876) through several routes from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Ubayd (550) - and from him Ibn Zanjawayh (798) - through the route of Mujalid bin Sa'id, from al-Sha'bi, who said: When Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) conquered Iraq and Syria and collected the kharaj, he gathered the Companions (of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) and said: "I have decided to fix stipends ('ata') for those who conquered it." They said: "What an excellent decision you have made, O Commander of the Believers." Then Umar asked: "With whom shall we begin?" They said: "Who is more deserving of that than you? Begin with yourself." Umar said: "No, rather I will begin with the family of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." So he wrote down twelve thousand (12,000) for A'ishah, the Mother of the Believers, and ten thousand (10,000) for the rest of the wives of the Prophet.
Grading: And Mujalid is weak.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Zanjawayh (799) through the route of Abu Bakr bin Ayyash, from Abdullah, from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, who said: When the khumus (one-fifth) of the non-Arabs was brought to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) … (and in this hadith it says:) Then he ordered ten thousand for the Mothers of the Believers and twelve thousand for A'ishah.
Grading: Its chain up to Sa'id bin al-Musayyib is hasan, if Allah wills.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abdullah: he is Ibn Ali al-Azraq.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Ubayd (601) and Ibn Zanjawayh (874) through the route of Yunus bin Yazid, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) fixed twelve thousand each for the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), except Juwayriyah and Safiyyah, for whom he fixed six thousand each.
Grading: In its chain is Abdullah bin Salih, who is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory).
Reference / Source: Ma'mar narrated in "al-Jami'" (20036) from al-Zuhri, from Ibrahim bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf, who said: When the treasures of Kisra were brought to Umar … (and in it:) he fixed twelve thousand dirhams for each of the wives of the Prophet, except Safiyyah and Juwayriyah, for each of whom he fixed six thousand dirhams.
Note / Clarification: We (the editors) say: This was Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) initial opinion; then A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) pointed out to him that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to treat them all equally, so Umar too treated them equally. This report (about equality) was narrated by Ahmad 25/ (15905), Ya'qub al-Fasawi in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" 1/ 463, and al-Bayhaqi 6/ 349 through the route of Ali bin Rabah, from Nashirah bin Sumayy al-Yazani, from Umar, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This is strengthened by what Ibn Abi Shaybah 12/ 317 and Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Mujabi al-Da'wah" (45) narrated through the route of Yazid bin Harun, from Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, that he came to Umar from Bahrain … (and in it:) Umar fixed twelve thousand each for the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Grading: Its chain is hasan. Ibn Sa'd said in "al-Tabaqat" 3/ 276: "This is what is agreed upon."
