It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Aswad bin Sari' al-Tamimi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Prophet of Allah! I have composed some verses in which I have extolled Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and praised you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite what you have said in extolling Allah, and leave aside what you have said in praising me." So I began reciting. Just then a tall man with a prominent nose came in, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Stop." When he left, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite." I began reciting again. Only a little while had passed when he came back, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: "Stop." When he left (again), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite." I said: O Prophet of Allah! Who is this man at whose coming you say "Stop," and at whose leaving you say "Recite"? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is Umar bin al-Khattab, and he has nothing to do with falsehood (idle amusement)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Abu Bakr bin Abi Darim has been criticised, he is corroborated; the real problem is Ma'mar bin Bakkar: Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned him in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 8/ 259 and remained silent about him, yet in the biography of Hisham bin Abi Hisham al-Hanafi (9/ 69) he reported from his father that he (Ma'mar) is "majhul". According to al-Uqayli, there are errors in Ma'mar's hadith and most of his narrations are not corroborated. Imam al-Dhahabi also faulted it in "al-Talkhis" on account of Ma'mar bin Bakkar al-Sa'di, who has "manakir" (munkar narrations). Important point: Ma'mar is alone in transmitting this hadith via al-Zuhri from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakrah, and Imam al-Zuhri is not known to have heard from Abd al-Rahman. Moreover, Abd al-Rahman's hearing from al-Aswad bin Sari' is also disputed, and what is well known is that this hadith is Basran, narrated through Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an (who is weak). Reference / Source: This narration was recorded by Ibn Qani' in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" 1/ 18, and by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (844) and "al-Awsat" (5794). Through al-Tabarani, Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "al-Hilyah" 1/ 46 and "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (910), and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" 4/(1453), via Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Sulayman (known as Mutayyan), with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded it 24/(15585, 15590, 15591) via Hammad bin Salamah and (16300) via Hammad bin Zayd; both of them narrate it with the chain Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakrah. Details of the narration: The narration of Ibn Zayd (Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an) is in abridged wording.
