أخبرنا الشيخ أبو بكر بن إسحاق، أخبرنا أبو شُعيب الحرَّاني، حدثنا النُّفَيلي، حدثنا محمد بن سَلَمة، عن محمد بن إسحاق (4)، عن الزُّهْري، عن عُبيد الله ابن عبد الله بن عُتْبة بن مسعود، عن ابن عبّاس: أنَّ رسول الله ﷺ لما خَرَج لفَتْح مكة استَخلَف أبا رُهْمٍ كُلثومَ بن حُصَين الغِفاريَّ على المدينة (5).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for the Conquest of Makkah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Abu Ruhm Kulthum bin Husayn al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) as his deputy (governor) over Madinah.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The text from "Akhbarana Abu Shu'ayb" up to here has dropped out of manuscript (M) and is crossed out in manuscript (S); it has been supplied from manuscript (B).
(5) إسناده حسن من أجل محمد بن إسحاق. أبو شعيب الحراني: هو عبد الله بن الحسن، والنفيلي: هو أبو جعفر عبد الله بن محمد الحراني.
Grading: This chain is "hasan" because of Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Important point: Abu Shu'ayb al-Harrani is 'Abd Allah bin al-Hasan, and al-Nufayli is Abu Ja'far 'Abd Allah bin Muhammad al-Harrani.
وأخرجه الطبراني في "الكبير" 19/ (414)، ومن طريقه الضياء المقدسي في "المختارة" 11 / (144) عن أبي شعيب الحراني، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" 19/ (414), and through him al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" 11 / (144), through the chain of Abu Shu'ayb al-Harrani, by this same route.
وأخرجه أحمد 4/ (2392) عن يعقوب بن إبراهيم بن سعد الزهري، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن إسحاق، به. وصرح ابن إسحاق عنده بالسماع من ابن شِهاب الزهري.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded it in 4/ (2392) through the chain of Ya'qub bin Ibrahim bin Sa'd al-Zuhri, from his father, from Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In that narration Ibn Ishaq explicitly stated that he "heard" it directly from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri (which removes the concern of tadlis).
