كَانَ النَّبِيُّ يُحِبُّ عَقِيلًا لِحُبَّيْنِ
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) loving Aqil (may Allah be pleased with him) for two reasons

حدَّثَناهُ أبو عمر محمد بن عبد الواحد الزاهد، حدثنا محمد بن عثمان ابن أبي شَيْبة، حدثنا عبيد الله بن عمر، حدثنا يونس بن أرقَمَ، حدثنا هارون بن سعد، عن زيد بن علي بن الحسين، عن أبيه، عن جدِّه قال: أَشْرَفَ رسول الله ﷺ من بيتٍ ومعه عمَّاهُ العبّاس وحمزةُ، وعليٌّ وجعفرٌ وعَقيلٌ هم في أرضٍ يعملون فيها، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: لعمَّيهِ: "اختارا مِن هؤلاء"، فقال أحدهما: اخترتُ جعفرًا، وقال الآخر: اخترتُ عَقِيلًا (1)، فقال: "خيَّرتُكُما فاختَرتُما، فاختارَ الله لي عليًّا (2).
Zayd bin Ali bin al-Husayn narrates from his father, and he from Zayd's grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked out from a house, and with him were his two uncles, Sayyiduna Abbas and Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with them both), while Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Ja'far and Sayyiduna Aqil (may Allah be pleased with them) were working on a piece of land. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his two uncles: "Choose from among these (to take into your care)." One of them chose Ja'far and the other chose Aqil. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have both made your choice, and Allah has chosen Ali for me."

(1) تحرَّف في نسخنا الخطية إلى: عليًا، والتصويب من النسخة المحمودية كما في طبعة الميمان.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts available to us the word here had become "'Aliyyan", which is a corruption (scribal error); it has been corrected from the Mahmudiyyah manuscript, as it also appears in the al-Mayman edition.
(2) منكر وإسناده ضعيف، محمد بن عثمان بن أبي شيبة فيه مقال وبعضهم اتهمه بالكذب، ويونس بن أرقم قال فيه ابن خِراش: ليّن الحديث، وقال البزار في "مسنده" (507): كان صدوقًا فيه شيعية شديدة، وذكره في "ثقاته".
Grading: This narration is munkar and its chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrator Muhammad bin 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah has been criticised, and some imams accused him of lying, while regarding Yunus bin Arqam Ibn Khirash said he is "layyin al-hadith" (a soft, weak narrator).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bazzar wrote about him in his "Musnad" (507) that he was truthful but had strong Shi'i leanings, and he also mentioned him in the book "al-Thiqat".
عبيد الله بن عمر: هو القواريري. ولم نقف على هذا الحديث عند غير المصنف.
Important point: 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Umar in the chain is "'Ubayd Allah bin 'Umar al-Qawariri".
Note / Clarification: We did not find this hadith with anyone other than the author (al-Hakim).
