Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6560

It is narrated from Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali bin al-Husayn that we said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them both): Narrate to us the hadiths that you yourself heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and what you saw with your own eyes, and do not narrate to us through anyone else, however trustworthy he may be. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "What is between the navel and the knee is 'awrah (to be covered)." And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Charity given in secret extinguishes the anger of the Lord." And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The worst people of my Ummah are those who were born into luxury and were raised in it; they eat food of many colours, wear clothes of all kinds, ride mounts of various sorts, and are affected and pretentious in their speech." And I heard that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I passed by some people who were talking among themselves, but when they saw me they fell silent and found me a burden (in their gathering). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have they done that?! By the One in whose Hand is my soul, none of them will be a (complete) believer until he loves you for the sake of his love for me. Do they hope to enter Paradise through my intercession while Banu Abd al-Muttalib do not hope for it (that is, their right to it is the greatest)?"

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is ruined (talif, i.e. utterly unreliable).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi says in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak": "I think it is mawdu' (fabricated), for Ishaq is matruk and Asram is accused of lying." In the biography of Ishaq in "Mizan al-I'tidal" he said: "He is among the ruined (narrators); among his calamities (grossly munkar narrations) which al-Azdi cited as marfu' …", and he cited this hadith, then said: "All of it is from the narration of Asram bin Hawshab from him, and he (Asram) is not thiqah; he is ruined (halik)."
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (7761) from Muhammad bin Ya'qub, from Abu al-Ash'ath Ahmad bin al-Miqdam, with this chain.
Reference / Source: The second part of this hadith (which concerns giving charity in secret) was narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Saghir" (1033), and via him by al-Quda'i in "Musnad al-Shihab" (99), from Muhammad bin 'Awn al-Sirafi, from Ahmad bin al-Miqdam, likewise.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In support of this fragment there are several marfu' hadiths, but their chains revolve around majhul, da'if and matruk narrators.
Grading: Shaykh al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on him) was lenient in declaring it "sahih" in "Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah" (1908) on the basis of all these routes, whereas this narration does not reach that rank; at most it may bear being called "hasan". Al-Tirmidhi graded the narration of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) hasan in his "Jami'" (664), even though it contains one weak narrator. Al-Mundhiri and al-Haythami graded hasan the narration of Abu Umamah in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (8014), although it too contains a weak narrator and one who is not known.
Grading: The last part of the hadith is sahih in its origin, but with mention of al-'Abbas, the uncle of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), not his son.
Reference / Source: This has already passed with the author (al-Hakim) under number (5521); see it there.
