Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 656

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that from the time the Qur'an was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) never urinated standing.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. The two Shaykhs recorded the narration of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah in which it is established that he (peace and blessings be upon him) urinated standing, while Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Since I became Muslim I have never urinated standing," and Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud used to regard it as uncouth behaviour.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Nu'aym is "al-Fadl bin Dukayn", and Sufyan is "Sufyan (bin Sa'id) al-Thawri".
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it (41/ 25045 and 42/ 25787) from Waki' and Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain.
Note / Clarification: It will come again at numbers (672) and (673).
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (307), al-Tirmidhi (12), al-Nasa'i (25) and Ibn Hibban (1430) recorded it via Sharik (Ibn Abd Allah bin Abi Namir), from al-Miqdam bin Shurayh, from his father, from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), with the wording: "Whoever tells you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) urinated standing, do not believe him; he (peace and blessings be upon him) only ever urinated sitting."

Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (224) and Muslim (273) recorded it.
Note / Clarification: The way to reconcile it with the hadith of A'ishah is what is mentioned in "Fath al-Bari" 1/ 677 (in our edition): A'ishah's statement is based on her own knowledge, so it is taken to refer to what he (peace and blessings be upon him) did in the houses; as for outside the houses, she was not aware of it. Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), one of the senior Companions, preserved it, and we have shown that this took place in al-Madinah. This contains a refutation of her denial that it occurred after the revelation of the Qur'an.

Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (1/ 124), al-Bazzar (149), Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (284) and al-Tahawi in "Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar" (4/ 268) recorded it.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.

Grading: It is a sahih report, but we have not come across it via this route.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (1/ 124 and 2/ 61) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (9503) recorded it via al-Musayyab bin Rafi', from Abd Allah (Ibn Mas'ud) (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it (2/ 285) via Ibn Buraydah, from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
