Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6542

Muhammad bin Sa'd says: I said to Muhammad bin Umar (al-Waqidi): The people of Kufah have narrated through al-A'mash from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I used to draw water for my companions from the well on the day of Badr! Muhammad bin Umar said: This is an error in the narration of the people of Iraq, in that they count Sayyiduna Jabir and Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with them both) among those who took part in Badr, whereas neither Musa bin Uqbah, nor Muhammad bin Ishaq, nor Abu Ma'shar, nor anyone else who narrated the Sirah has reported that.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The text between the square brackets [ ] has dropped out of our manuscripts; however, this chain is well known and has already passed with the author (al-Hakim) under number (4568). The evidence for this is that Makhlad bin Ja'far (al-Baqarhi) is known for narrating from Muhammad bin Jarir al-Tabari, as stated in "Tarikh Baghdad" (15/ 230), and Ibn Jarir in his "Tarikh" does not narrate from Muhammad bin Sa'd (author of al-Tabaqat) except through the intermediary of al-Harith bin Muhammad bin Abi Usamah.
