Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6515

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: I recited this verse: "You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love." [Surah Al Imran: 92] Then I reflected on the blessings which Allah had granted me, and I found nothing dearer to me than my slave girl "Radiyyah". So I said: She is free for the pleasure of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Had it not been that I never go back on anything I have dedicated for the sake of Allah, I would have married her. Then he married her to (his servant) Nafi', and she became the mother of his child (umm walad).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (M) and (B) the name has become "'Umar" because the letter "waw" has dropped out of it, whereas according to manuscript (S) the correct name is "Muhammad bin 'Amr", and he is "Ibn 'Alqamah al-Laythi".

Grading: This report is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Muhammad bin Maslamah al-Wasiti is weak, he is corroborated (mutaba'); Abu 'Amr bin Hamas has the potential to be graded hasan; and there is also corroboration for the meaning of this report from other narrations.
