حدثنا محمد بن صالح بن هانئ، حدثنا الفضل بن محمد، حدثنا إبراهيم ابن المنذر الحِزَامي قال: قال ابنُ واقدٍ: حدثنا عمرُ بن عُقْبة، قال: سمعت شُعبة مولى ابن عبّاس يقول: مات ابنُ عبّاس سنةَ ثمان وستين بالطائف وهو ابنُ خمسٍ وسبعينَ، وكان يصفِّرُ لحيته (1).
Shu'bah, the freed slave (mawla) of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), narrates that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) died in the year 68 AH at Ta'if, when he was 75 years old, and he used to apply yellow dye to his beard.

(1) إسناده ضعيف، ابن واقد: هو محمد بن عمر الواقدي، وفيه كلام معروف عند أهل الحديث، وشيخه عمر بن عقبة لا يعرف لم نقف له على ترجمة.
Grading: Its chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Waqid refers to the famous historian Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, about whom the criticism of the hadith scholars is well known. Moreover, his shaykh 'Umar bin 'Uqbah is "majhul" (unknown), and no biography of him is available anywhere.
وأخرجه عن الواقدي أيضًا كاتبه محمد بن سعد في الطبقة الخامسة من "الطبقات" (بتحقيق محمد بن صامل السلمي) 1/ 202 و 204، وقرن بعمر بن عقبة في الموضع الثاني محمد بن رفاعة بن ثَعلَبة القرظي، وهذا مجهول الحال.
Reference / Source: His scribe Muhammad bin Sa'd also narrated it from al-Waqidi in "al-Tabaqat" (1/ 202, 204).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There, Muhammad bin Rifa'ah al-Qurazi is paired with 'Umar bin 'Uqbah, and he himself is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition).
وقد روى ابن سعد أيضًا 1/ 204 عن الواقدي، عن خالد بن القاسم البياضي، عن شعبة: أنَّ ابن عبّاس توفي سنة ثمان وستين وهو ابن إحدى وسبعين سنة. وهذا قوي.
Grading: This narration is qawi (strong).
Important point: Ibn Sa'd (1/ 204) transmitted through the route of Shu'bah that Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) died in 68 AH, and at that time he was 71 years old.
قال الحافظ ابن حجر في "الإصابة" 4/ 151: اتفقوا على أنه مات بالطائف سنة ثمان وستين واختلفوا في سنه، فقيل: ابن إحدى وسبعين، وقيل: ابن اثنتين، وقيل: ابن أربع، والأول هو الأقوى.
Note / Clarification: al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar writes in "al-Isabah" (4/ 151) that the historians agree that he died in al-Ta'if in 68 AH; however, regarding his age there are statements of 71, 72 and 74 years, of which the statement of 71 years is the strongest.
وأما التصفير، فقد صحَّ عن ابن عبّاس أنه يصفِّر، أخرجه ابن سعد 1/ 201 من طريق ابن جريج عن عطاء بن أبي رباح.
Grading: Dyeing the hair yellow (tasfir) is authentically established from Ibn 'Abbas.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (1/ 201) narrated it through Ibn Jurayj from 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah.
والتصفير: هو تغيير الشيب بصبغه بالوَرْس والزعفران.
Note / Clarification: "Tasfir" means changing the whiteness of old age to a yellow colour using wars (a plant) or saffron.
