Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that two men set out on a journey. The time of prayer came and they had no water with them, so they performed dry ablution (tayammum) with clean earth and prayed. Then they found water while the time was still in. One of them repeated the ablution and the prayer, while the other did not. Then they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him what had happened. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the one who had not repeated: "You acted according to the Sunnah, and your prayer suffices you." And he said to the one who had performed ablution and repeated: "For you there is a double reward."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, because Abdullah bin Nafi' is reliable (thiqah) and he narrated this chain from al-Layth as connected, whereas others narrated it as mursal.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah except Abd al-Rahman bin Hasan, who is weak, but he is corroborated. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement over its chain: Abu Dawud (338) and al-Nasa'i in "al-Mujtaba" (433) recorded it via two routes from Abd Allah bin Nafi', with this chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak (al-Nasa'i 434) and Yahya bin Bukayr (in what follows with the author) contradicted Ibn Nafi': both narrated it from al-Layth bin Sa'd, from Amirah bin Abi Najiyah, from Bakr bin Sawadah, from Ata' bin Yasar, as mursal. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thus they both narrated it as mursal and placed Amirah bin Abi Najiyah between al-Layth and Bakr; al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah. Important point: That said, al-Layth's hearing directly from Bakr bin Sawadah is quite possible, since they were contemporaries in the same city for more than twenty years. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi corroborated Ibn Nafi' in narrating it as connected (mawsul), in Ibn al-Sakan's "Sahih" (as in Ibn al-Qattan's "Bayan al-Wahm wa al-Iham" 2/ 434 and al-Zayla'i's "Nasb al-Rayah" 1/ 160): he narrated it from al-Layth, from Amr bin al-Harith and Amirah bin Abi Najiyah, from Bakr bin Sawadah, from Ata', from Abu Sa'id (al-Khudri) (may Allah be pleased with him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Lahi'ah narrated it as mursal in Abu Dawud (339), from Bakr bin Sawadah, from Abu Abd Allah the freed slave of Isma'il bin Ubayd, from Ata' bin Yasar; but Ibn Lahi'ah has a poor memory, and Abu Abd Allah is unknown (majhul).
