Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6423

Shaqiq states: Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) delivered a sermon (to the people) during the Hajj season. He began Surah al-Nur and started reciting it and explaining it. I (in amazement) began to say: I have never seen or heard speech like this; if the people of Persia and Rome heard it, they would surely accept Islam.

Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 324) via Abu Hamid bin Jabalah, from Muhammad bin Ishaq (who is Ibn Ibrahim al-Thaqafi al-Sarraj), with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, in this narration "Surat al-Baqarah" is mentioned in place of "Surat al-Nur".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" (1/ 36) through Abu al-Sa'ib Salm bin Junadah, from Abu Mu'awiyah.
Details of the narration: In it Surat al-Nur is mentioned, with these words: "If the Turks and the Romans had heard it (they would have believed)."
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1934, 1948), Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa-l-Tarikh" (1/ 495), al-Tabari (1/ 36) and Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "Jami' Bayan al-'Ilm wa Fadlih" (731) narrated it through various routes from al-A'mash.
