Umar bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, from his grandfather, that the mother of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to treat the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with great devotion and courtesy. One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her and asked: "O Umm Abdullah! How are you?" She said: "I am well, O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be ransomed for you, how are you?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "And how is Abdullah?" She said: "He too is well." Abdullah was a man who had turned away from the world. On the day of Siffin, his father said to him: "Go out and fight." He said: "O my father! How can you order me to fight when you have heard the instruction of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that I heard?" His father said: "I ask you by Allah, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took your hand, placed it in my hand and said: 'Obey your father, Amr bin al-As'?" He said: "Yes." His father said: "Then I order you to fight." So he went out to fight. When the war was over, Abdullah said in verse that had even a she-camel witnessed my stand and the scene at Siffin that day, its locks would have turned white; that evening when the people of Iraq came like spring clouds driven by the southern winds; whenever I said they had turned and fled, fresh battalions of theirs came before us and stood firm; they said to us: our view is that you pledge allegiance to Ali, and we said: our view is that you should be fought.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The phrase "'Umar bin Shu'ayb akhu" is missing from manuscript (B). Note / Clarification: This 'Umar bin Shu'ayb was mentioned by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" 7/413, and Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, in "Su'alatuhu li-l-Daraqutni" (243), reported from Imam al-Daraqutni that he ('Umar bin Shu'ayb) is prone to error (wahm). Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi also mentioned him in "Tali Talkhis al-Mutashabih" 1/158 and said that we know of no other musnad narration from him besides this one hadith; then he cited this very hadith.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Our manuscripts read "Umm Abd Allah bin 'Amr Nubayh bint al-Hajjaj", which is an error, Important point: It was corrected from "Bughyat al-Bahith 'an Zawa'id Musnad al-Harith" and other takhrij sources, some of which read "bint Munabbih bin al-Hajjaj", and this is what also passed earlier from Khalifah bin Khayyat.
Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets (mu'qufayn) had dropped out of our manuscripts; we took it from "Bughyat al-Bahith" and other sources and recorded it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The manuscripts have the word "law" here, whereas the word found in "al-Nuskhah al-Mahmudiyyah" and the Mayman edition is what has been retained in the text, because it is what makes the metre (of the verse) correct.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if". Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is the weakness of Abd al-Malik bin Qudamah al-Jumahi; moreover, 'Umar bin Shu'ayb (as al-Daraqutni said) is prone to error. 3/ 248 - 249. Reference / Source: This narration is in "Musnad al-Harith - Bughyat al-Bahith" (756). Through al-Harith's route, Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (7977), al-Khatib in "Tali Talkhis al-Mutashabih" (1/158-159) and al-Rafi'i in "al-Tadwin fi Akhbar Qazwin" (3/248-249). Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (7/413), Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa-l-Mathani" (805), Isma'il bin Muhammad al-Asbahani in "Siyar al-Salaf al-Salihin" (pages 503-504) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (31/276), through various routes from Yazid bin Harun, some of them mentioning it in abridged form. Note / Clarification: The phrase "raba'athu al-jana'ib" means that it was grazed in the season of rabi' (spring), and "al-jana'ib" means camels. Note / Clarification: The literal meaning of "wa-rjahannat al-kata'ib" is: the battalions staggered, swayed and were routed.
