It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take the Qur'an from four people, two of the Muhajirun and two of the Ansar: from Abdullah bin Mas'ud, Salim the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah, Ubayy bin Ka'b and Mu'adh bin Jabal." The narrator says: He (peace and blessings be upon him) singled out Abdullah bin Mas'ud with a word.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The full name of al-Humaydi in the chain is "Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr al-Asadi al-Makki", and Sufyan refers to "Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tahawi narrated it in "Mushkil al-Athar" (5584), and Imam al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (14282) and "al-Awsat" (2404), with the chain of Ibrahim bin Bashshar al-Ramadi from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah.
Important point: It explains the words which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said about Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), namely: "Whoever would like to recite the Qur'an fresh, just as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm 'Abd (Ibn Mas'ud)".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Tabarani claimed in "al-Awsat" that Ibrahim bin Bashshar al-Ramadi is alone in narrating this hadith from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, but this is not so, because al-Humaydi also narrated it from Sufyan, as found with Imam al-Hakim.
Reference / Source: The origin of this hadith was also narrated from Abd Allah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) by Masruq bin al-Ajda', and it is in Musnad Ahmad 11/(6523, 6767), al-Bukhari (3760, 3806, 3808, 4999), Muslim (2464), al-Tirmidhi (3810), al-Nasa'i (7942) and Ibn Hibban (736, 7122).
