Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 637

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Some goats were gathered with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Dharr, go out with them (to the pasture)." So I went out to al-Rabadhah. There I would become junub and would spend five or six days in that state. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Abu Dharr!" I remained silent. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May your mother lose you, woe to your mother!" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called a slave girl, who brought a large vessel of water. She screened me with a cloth, and I screened myself behind the mount and took a ritual bath, and I felt as though a mountain had been lifted off me. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Clean earth is the ablution of a Muslim, even if (he finds no water) for ten years. When you find water, let it touch your skin (that is, perform ghusl or ablution), for that is better."
This hadith is sahih (authentic), but only Abu Qilabah narrated it from Amr bin Bujdan, and this is in line with my principle, as the two Shaykhs have taken such narrations.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting reports), and this chain is "hasan", if Allah wills, because of Amr bin Bujdan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Muthanna is Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna al-Anbari, Khalid is Khalid (bin Abd Allah) al-Tahhan al-Wasiti, and Khalid al-Hadhdha' is Khalid bin Mihran. Abu Qilabah is Abd Allah bin Zayd al-Jarmi.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (332) recorded it from Musaddad, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (332) and Ibn Hibban (1311) also recorded it via two routes from Khalid al-Tahhan, with it.
Details of the narration: The words "Clean earth (is the ablution of the Muslim) ..." were recorded by Ahmad (35/ 21568) and al-Tirmidhi (124) via Sufyan al-Thawri, from Khalid al-Hadhdha', with it.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih".
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (307) also recorded it via Sufyan al-Thawri, from Ayyub (al-Sakhtiyani), from Abu Qilabah, with it.
Details of the narration: Ayyub's narration is given at length in Musnad Ahmad (35/ 21304) and Abu Dawud (333), except that in both of them it reads: from Abu Qilabah, from a man of Banu Amir, whom he did not name.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (1312) also recorded it at length via Yazid bin Zuray', from Khalid al-Hadhdha', with it; see the rest of its takhrij in these sources.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bazzar (10068) and al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (1333).
Grading: Its chain is strong, and Ibn al-Qattan declared it sahih in "al-Wahm wa al-Iham" 5/ 266.
Note / Clarification: "Al-Rabadhah" is a town about 200 km east of al-Madinah al-Munawwarah; it now lies in ruins.

Note / Clarification: In manuscript (B) it reads "wa-thabat"; see his remarks after hadith (97).
