Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 638

It is narrated from Abu Qays, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), that Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As was the commander of a detachment, and they faced such severe cold as had never been seen before. When he went out for the dawn prayer, he said: "By Allah, I had a wet dream last night, but by Allah, I have never seen cold like this. Have you also felt such cold?" They said: "No." So he washed his private parts, performed the ablution of prayer and led them in prayer. When they reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "How did you find Amr and his companions?" They praised him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, he led us in prayer while he was junub." He (peace and blessings be upon him) summoned him and asked him, and he told him about the severe cold and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah says: 'And do not kill yourselves' [An-Nisa: 29], and if I had bathed I would have died." At this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is sahih, although there is disagreement over its chain and some words of its text, as explained in "Musnad Ahmad" 29/ (17812).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah, down to the last of them, but it has the outward form of a mursal report, because Abu Qays (the freed slave (mawla) of Amr bin al-As) is a Successor and did not witness this incident; most likely, however, he heard it from his master Amr bin al-As. And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (335) and Ibn Hibban (1315) recorded it via two routes from Ibn Wahb, with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu Dawud paired Ibn Lahi'ah with Ibn Wahb, and Ibn Lahi'ah's narration is in "Musnad Ahmad" 29/ (17812), but via Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr from Amr bin al-As, omitting Abu Qays.
Details of the narration: In that narration tayammum is mentioned in place of wudu', as in the following narration of Yahya bin Ayyub.
