حدثني أبو علي الحافظ، حدثنا الهيثم بن خلف الدُّورِي، حدثنا داود ابن رُشَيد، حدثنا إسماعيل بن عيّاش، حدثني سالم بن عبد الله الكَلَاعي (4)، عن أبي عبد الله القُرشي قال: دخل عبدُ الله بن عُمر على عبد الله بن عمرو وقد سَوَّدَ لحيتَه، فقال عبد الله بن عمر: السلام عليك أيها الشُّوَيْب، فقال له ابن عمرو: أَما تعرفُني يا أبا عبد الرحمن؟ قال: بلى، أعرفُك شيخًا، فأنت اليومَ شابٌّ، إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: "الصُّفْرةُ خِضاب المؤمن، والحُمْرةُ خِضاب المسلم، والسَّوَادُ خِضابُ الكافر" (1).

Abu Abdullah al-Qurashi states that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) when he had dyed his beard black. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Peace be upon you, O little old man!" Ibn Amr said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! Do you not recognise me?" He said: "Of course I do. I knew you as an elderly man, but today you look like a young man. Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Yellow is the dye of the believer, red is the dye of the Muslim, and black is the dye of the disbeliever.'"

(4) هكذا في نسخنا الخطية، وكذا في بعض مصادر ترجمته، وقد اعتبره الحافظ ابن حجر في "لسان الميزان" 4/ 9 سالم بن عبد الله أبا المهاجر مولى بني كلاب، فهو كلابي بالباء وليس كَلاعيًا بالعين، وله ترجمة في "تهذيب الكمال" 10/ 158.
Identification of names: According to al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, this is Salim bin Abd Allah Abu al-Muhajir, who is 'Kilabi' (with a ba') and not 'Kala'i' (with an 'ayn). His biography is in Tahdhib al-Kamal (10/ 158).
(1) إسناده ضعيف منكر، علّته أبو عبد الله القرشي، قال ابن أبي حاتم الرازي في ترجمة سالم من "الجرح والتعديل" 4/ 185 وقد ساق له هذا الحديث: هو حديث منكر شبه الموضوع، وأحسبه من أبي عبد الله القرشي الذي لم يسمَّ. وقال الذهبي في "تلخيص المستدرك": حديث منكر، والقرشي نكرةٌ.
Grading: Its chain is 'da'if munkar'. Defect: Its bane is Abu Abd Allah al-Qurashi, who is unknown (nakirah). Ibn Abi Hatim declared it 'munkar and resembling a mawdu' (fabricated) report'.
وأخرجه الحكيم الترمذي في "المنهيات" ص 198، والطبراني في "الكبير" (14119) من طرق عن إسماعيل بن عيّاش، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi narrated it in "al-Manhiyyat" (p. 198) and Imam al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (14119) through various routes from Isma'il bin 'Ayyash with this same chain.
