Grading: This hadith is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain, if Allah wills, may possibly be "hasan", on account of Isma'il bin al-Hasan. Although we did not find his formal biography (tarjamah) in the sources available to us, two great hadith masters have narrated from him abundantly in their books, namely the shaykh of the author (al-Hakim) here, "Abu 'Ali al-Naysaburi", and "Imam al-Tabarani"; moreover, he has corroboration (mutaba'ah, support) in this hadith.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (14152) via the route of Isma'il bin al-Hasan al-Khaffaf (al-Tabarani called him by this nickname in the very places where he narrated from him), with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (2979) narrated it likewise with the chain of Abu al-Tahir Ahmad bin 'Amr bin Abi al-Sarh from Abd Allah bin Wahb.
Details of the narration: He transmitted this hadith through Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Hubuli (Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Ma'afiri), who said that three men came to Abd Allah bin 'Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) while I was also present there. They said: O Abu Muhammad! By Allah, we have nothing at all: no provision, no mount and no goods. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Choose whatever you wish. If you wish, come back to us and we will give you what Allah has made easy for us; if you wish, we will take your matter to the ruler; and if you wish, be patient, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The poor among the Muhajirun will enter Paradise forty years (kharif) before the rich on the Day of Resurrection". They said: Then we will be patient and will not ask for anything.
