حدثني محمد بن صالح بن هانئ، حَدَّثَنَا الحسين بن الفضل البَجَلي، حَدَّثَنَا هَوْذة بن خَليفة، حَدَّثَنَا عَوف، عن سعيد بن أبي الحسن قال: لم يكن أَحدٌ من أصحاب النَّبِيّ ﷺ أكثرَ حديثًا عنه من أبي هريرة، وإنَّ مروانَ بَعَثَه على المدينة وأراد حديثَه، فقال: ارْوِ كما رَوَينا، فلما أَبى عليه تَغفَّلَه فأَقعَدَ له كاتبًا، فجعل أبو هريرة يحدِّث ويكتب الكاتبُ حتَّى استَفرَغَ حديثَه أجمعَ، فقال مروان: تَعلمُ أنَّا قد كتبنا حديثَك أجمعَ؟ قال: أوَقَد فعلتُم، وإنْ تُطِيعُني (1) تَمحُهُ؟ قال: فمَحَاه (2).

Sa'id bin Abi al-Hasan narrates that none of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated more hadith than Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Marwan appointed him governor over Madinah and wanted (to put) his hadith (into writing), so Marwan said: "Narrate to us just as you narrated before." When he refused (to dictate them), Marwan caught him unawares and (secretly) seated a scribe for him. So Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) kept narrating and the scribe kept writing, until all of his hadith were complete. Then Marwan said: "Do you know that we have written down all of your hadith?" He asked: "Have you really done that? If you listen to me, erase it." The narrator said: So Marwan erased it.

(1) حقُّ "إنْ" هنا أن تجزم الفعل بعدها، لكنها قد تُحمَل على "لو" فترفع الفعل بعدها، انظر "شواهد التوضيح" لابن مالك ص 19.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to the rule, the conditional particle "in" here should have put the following verb in the jussive, but it is sometimes taken in the sense of "law", so the verb remains in the indicative. (See: Ibn Malik's "Shawahid al-Tawdih", p. 19).
(2) إسناده قوي. عوف: هو ابن أبي جميلة الأعرابي، وسعيد بن أبي الحسن: هو أخو الحسن البصري.
Grading: Its chain is strong.
Identification of names: 'Awf is 'Awf bin Abi Jamilah al-A'rabi, and Sa'id bin Abi al-Hasan is the brother of Imam al-Hasan al-Basri.
وأخرجه الخطيب البغدادي في "تقييد العلم" ص 41 من طريق أحمد بن الخليل البُرجلاني، عن هوذة بن خليفة بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrated it in "Taqyid al-'Ilm" (p. 41) through the chain of Ahmad bin al-Khalil al-Burjulani from Hawdhah bin Khalifah.
وأخرجه أيضًا من طريق خالد بن عبد الله الواسطي، عن عوف، به.
