Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6247

Mention of the virtues of Sayyiduna al-Arqam bin Abi al-Arqam al-Makhzumi (may Allah be pleased with him). It is narrated from Urwah bin al-Zubayr that among the names of those from Quraysh who took part in the Battle of Badr, from Banu Makhzum, was Sayyiduna al-Arqam bin Abi al-Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him). The name of his father Abu al-Arqam was Abd Manaf bin Abdullah bin Umar bin Makhzum, and al-Arqam's kunyah was Abu Khindif.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Manuscript (M) gives this name as "Jundab".
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it from Muhammad bin Amr bin Khalid in "al-Kabir" (905), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (1017).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration the name of Abu al-Arqam is given as Abd Manaf and his kunyah as "Abu Khundaf"; that is, the kunyah is assigned to his father (Abu al-Arqam) instead of to al-Arqam.
Identification of names: Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 223) assigned this kunyah to his grandfather Asad bin Abd Allah, but with him it is "Abu Jundab".
Important point: The well-known view is that al-Arqam's kunyah is "Abu Abd Allah", as Abu Nu'aym and other biographers recorded.
