Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6229

Sa'd bin Ibrahim narrates from his father or from one of his maternal aunts that Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about something or about a hadith, and he remained silent. Then he said: "I dislike narrating a hadith to you and then you adding a hundred things to it from yourselves."

Reference / Source: Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, narrated it in "Nuskhat Ibrahim bin Sa'd" (9), Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (2/ 759), Ibn Abi Khaythamah in his "Tarikh" (3591), and Ibn Asakir (20/ 362), via Ibrahim bin Sa'd from his father, from his maternal aunt (a daughter of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas). In Ibn Asakir's version she is named A'ishah. In Ya'qub's version it reads "from his maternal aunt, from one of the daughters of Sa'd"; so it appears in his printed edition, and perhaps the correct reading is "one of the daughters of Sa'd".
